INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Alayne Ingram scored 16 points as Michigan (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) continued its most successful women's basketball season ever by routing Northwestern 72-39 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten women's basketball tournament Friday.

Michigan (22-6) pulled ahead with a 27-6 run that developed as Northwestern (7-21) was going 10 minutes without a field goal in the first half.

The Wolverines, who are ranked in the Top 25 in women's basketball for the first time ever, took the lead for good 8-7 when Ingram sank her second of four 3-pointers to begin the run.

Northwestern's only points in the run came when two free throws by Tami Sears snapped a run of nine consecutive Michigan points. Another Ingram 3-pointer gave Michigan a 19-9 advantage with 6:20 left in the half.

Northwestern had led 7-5 after Leslie Schock threw in a jumper with 16:11 left in the half. It didn't get another field goal until the first of two straight by Billiee Russell with 6:10 to go.

Russell's second brought the Wildcats to within six and Michigan responded with 13 straight and led 32-15 at halftime.

Michigan dominated inside, outscoring the Wildcats 42-18 and outrebounding them 50-37. Michigan had 21 fast-break points, while Northwestern had none. Michigan also recorded a 9-1 advantage in second-chance points.

Northwestern, which didn't have a player finish in double figures, shot 27 percent in the first half (6-of-22) and 29 percent for the game.

The Wildcats had 24 turnovers and Michigan turned them into 23 points.

Michigan, which went into the game having already set a school record for victories in a season, will play defending NCAA champion Purdue in Saturday's second semifinal. Fourth-ranked Penn State will face Illinois in the other semifinal.
