Green Wave grind out semifinal win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Janell Burse scored 23 points and Grace Daley added 18 as Tulane (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, No. 23 AP) beat North Carolina Charlotte 79-75 in the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament Sunday.

The Green Wave (25-4) advanced to Monday's championship game against Alabama-Birmingham, a 79-67 winner over Southern Mississippi in Sunday's other semifinal game.

Sarah Goree had 17 points and Fabrecia Roberson added 10 for Tulane, which shot 51 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the 3-point line. Burse, Daley and Goree combined to make 22-of-38 shots, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Jameka Jones scored 23 points, Adrienne Jordan had 18 and Tonya Phifer 10 to lead 11th-seeded Charlotte (10-20). Freshman guard Alecia Abernathy pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds as the 49ers outrebounded Tulane 41-32.

Tulane led 40-31 at halftime, but the 49ers rallied to tie the game at 47 on a layup by Abernathy with 12:35 to play.

The lead changed hands several times down the stretch. Jones' 3-pointer pulled the 49ers within 74-73 with 41 seconds to play. Burse followed with a layup and free throw with 19 seconds remaining to seal the game.
