NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Katie Remke hit a free throw with 2 seconds remaining as Southern Methodist upset North Carolina State (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) 64-63 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Summer Erb's layup for fifth-sseded N.C. State (20-9) tied the game at 63 with 27 seconds left. Kaayla Chones then fouled Remke, who missed her first free throw but sank the second. The 12th-seeded Mustangs (22-8) were up 11 points with 1:46 remaining in the first half, but N.C. State cut the lead to 29-23 at intermission. SMU led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but N.C. State scored eight unanswered points to take its first lead, 55-53, with 5:08 to go. D-dra Rucker led SMU with 18 points, including 14 in the first half. Karlin Kennedy had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Anika Calvert added 14. Erb led N.C.
