KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee's Pat Summitt is looking ahead. Louisiana Tech's Leon Barmore is enjoying the moment.
"Tennessee has great tradition and has a lot of pride in its program. Our team played hard tonight. I thought we definitely deserved to win, and I am very pleased." The victory ended Tennessee's 41-game home winning streak and gave the Lady Techsters' their first victory over the Lady Vols since the 1996-1997 season. But Summitt and her team remember Tennessee went on to win its second NCAA championship in a row that season, and they know a lot can happen before the Final Four. "It's good that it's early in the season," said Tennessee's Semeka Randall, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds. "So there is a lot of room for improvement." Summitt said she was disappointed in her team's decision-making and game management. "Tonight we saw this team go out with a new point guard (Kristen Clement), a freshman in the starting lineup (Gwen Jackson) and a freshman off the bench (Kara Lawson)," Summitt said. "This team has a chance to be a great basketball team in March, but we need more people accountable on both ends of the court, making defensive and offensive plays." Tennessee fought back from 18 points down, but it couldn't get past Louisiana Tech guards Tamika Jackson and Betty Lennox. Jackson had 21 points, and Lennox had 20. "They have a strong 1-2 punch in the backcourt," Summitt said. "I don't know of one that is quicker." Perhaps most importantly, Jackson and Lennox kept their poise as a partisan Tennessee crowd of 10,142 cheered the Lady Vols back from a 45-27 deficit with 16:46 to play. "I told them with four minutes left, it is not a coaches' game anymore," Barmore said. "You have to keep your composure, take care of the ball and make free throws. "Our composure at the end was the biggest thing." The Lady Techsters held a 33-25 lead at halftime and took off on a 12-2 run to begin the second half before Tennessee began its late challenge. A putback by Tennessee's Michelle Snow tied the score at 58 with 5:13 to go. But Jackson, Lennox and Shaka Massey (13 points, 10 rebounds) hit four crucial free throws and two field goals down the stretch to preserve the victory. Barmore pointed to two defense stops at the end of the game as key. Both times Tennessee's Clement put up wild shots as time expired on the shot clock.
"Mentally, we were not there and we broke down," Clement said.
