CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- For North Carolina (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 AP), some Nikki Teasley was better than none at all. The All-ACC guard didn't start in North Carolina's 69-65 loss to UCLA because she had failed to meet offseason conditioning goals. After barely qualifying Saturday, Teasley still didn't get in enough practice time to impress coach Sylvia Hatchell enough for a start. So Teasley came off the bench Tuesday in North Carolina's 66-49 win over East Carolina and made three 3-pointers in the second half to hold off a Pirates rally. "I was just trying to help us get the momentum back. I was trying to be a team leader," Teasley said. East Carolina (0-2) trailed 34-23 at the half and 42-28 early in the second half, but Waynetta Veney's 3-pointer with 14:07 left started a 13-2 Pirates run. Rosalyn Canady made consecutive baskets that pulled East Carolina to within three with 8:46 remaining, but Teasley's two 3-pointers from the right side stopped the spurt. "We knew they'd make a run at us," Hatchell said. They're a good team and they ran some good stuff at us. I'm happy we showed some spunk when we had to." The Pirates were just 2-for-13 from the field and 2-for-7 from the line in the final 6:34. The Tar Heels (1-1) held a 13-5 advantage in offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes and forced the Pirates into 14 first-half turnovers. East Carolina had 22 turnovers to North Carolina's 12. "It wasn't very pretty, but it was a win," Hatchell said. "We have a lot of work to do. We all know that." "We beat ourselves," said East Carolina Coach Dee Gibson. "We couldn't score when we had to and we couldn't rebound. We held the No. 10 team in the country to 66 points. If we had rebounded, we'd have been in a dogfight." LaQuanda Barksdale had 18 points and 10 rebounds while Teasley finished with 14 points. Jackie Higgins had 13 rebounds and 12 rebounds, and Juana Brown scored 11 points for North Carolina.
