| North Carolina Tar Heels RECORD: 20-13 COACH: Sylvia Hatchell | SEASON RESULTS | OUTLOOK First round: Defeated Maine, 62-57
Second round: Defeated Rice, 83-50
Sweet 16: Lost to Georgia, 83-57
Anything was possible in the ACC this season, and the Tar Heels are the perfect example. After junior guard Nikki Teasley took a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons, UNC went 1-6 without her, starting off the ACC season with a 2-6 mark. Then, after Teasley returned from her three-week absence, the Tar Heels won eight of their next 11 games. And after earning the fifth seed in the ACC tournament, the Tar Heels upset No. 1 seed and regular-season ACC champ Virginia to reach the title game in the conference tournament. And despite going 3-7 against top 25 foes this season, UNC has proven it shouldn't be overlooked. Teasley (14.9 ppg, 6.0 apg) and LaQuanda Barksdale (17.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg) continue to lead the way, along with Sylvia Hatchell, a coach who always seems to come through in the NCAA Tournament. In '99, UNC advanced to the Sweet 16 before being crushed by eventual champion Purdue, 82-59.
