Pies face NZ champs in netball cup semi

Collingwood netball coach Rob Wright says his unbeaten Magpies have already ticked every box at the Super Club netball tournament heading into a semi-final against the New Zealand champions.

The Pies topped their four-team pool, in Nelson, beating all three of their New Zealand opponents and being outscored in just one of the 12 quarters.

The Super Netball semi-finalists have qualified for a last-four game on Thursday against New Zealand champions, Central Pulse, who boast three Silver Ferns World Cup winners in defenders Karin Burger and Katrina Rore and shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio.

"They lost their first game (of this tournament) but they didn't have Ekenasio play so they are going to be really tough so it will be a great challenge for us," Wright told AAP.

Irrespective of whether they can win on Thursday, Collingwood have already achieved much of what Wright had hoped for coming into the eight team, three-nation tournament.

"Our objective was to try and win it if we could, but in reality when you spend nine days with a group, we really wanted to start building it off the court, just that time away together is invaluable," Wright said.

"We've just tweaked some of our structures around our attack and defence, so we wanted to start trying to put those into place and see how they are building, so that's been a massive focus.

"Just giving these players some real experience against what are the world champions, so we've ticked all those three really well.

"Now it's a great opportunity to see if we can put out two performances to get the (tournament) win, but for me we've probably already ticked every box I wanted to on this trip.

Jamaican shooter Shimona Nelson has missed just nine of 119 shots across the three games.

"The 12 months since we've had her and the growth in her game across that one year has just been phenomenal," Wright said.

New Zealand sides Northern Mystics and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic will contest the other semi, with the final to be played on Friday.
