About the play: Emmitt Smith has made a living running this play. This is a go-to play for Dallas. The Cowboys offensive line has always prided itself on giving Smith a nice running lane.

Keys to the play: Troy Aikman must get Smith the ball 6-7 yards deep, allowing the running back to use his great vision to pick his hole. He must have time with the ball to adjust at the line of scrimmage.

Critical players: The Cowboys offensive linemen must create a new line of scrimmage. Any penetration by the defense disrupts this play completely.

When to expect this play: Dallas will run this a lot on first down. The Cowboys will set up the play by using multiple motions/formations so the defense can't see tendencies.

Defense's key: The defense must penetrate the backfield, and the backside defensive tackle and the backside end must not be fully blocked because "40 Gut" can cut back all the way to the backside offensive tackle.
