Upon Further Review: Pro Bowl snubs

By Joe Lago
ESPN.com

Just put on my new specs that give me 20-20 hindsight. Good thing I got them in time for this year's Pro Bowl selections because I couldn't believe what I saw ... or didn't see.

Mike Anderson
Mike Anderson, the league's third-leading rusher, should be going to the Pro Bowl.
Let's peruse the list of Those Who Got Snubbed For The Pro Bowl.

Donovan McNabb. How could one of the front-runners for the league MVP not make it? So what if Jeff Garcia has 50 touchdowns and 9,000 yards passing? He's playing on a team trying to escape salary-cap hell. McNabb is the Eagles' offense. He proved that last Sunday when he threw for 390 yards and four touchdowns in a playoff-clinching win over Cleveland.

McNabb ranks 15th in the NFL in passer rating (78.5), 11 notches below Garcia's 98.6, but that's because he's had to throw a league-high 529 attempts to make up for Philadelphia's lack of a running back. Now, only the MVP will make up for this oversight.

Mike Anderson. The unknown soldier of the Broncos deserves his Pro Bowl stripes. Not only has he emerged out of nowhere to become the league's third-leading rusher (1,353), but the ex-Marine is making Terrell Davis a little nervous with his sudden success. So who should Anderson have bumped from the AFC backfield? Corey Dillon, who's fourth in rushing with 1,320 yards for the going-nowhere-again Bengals.

OK, anyone can run behind Denver's offensive line. But what makes Anderson special is the punishment he inflicts five, six, seven yards downfield after blasting through those holes (see anyone can do color commentary).

Curtis Martin. I can just hear the complaints on New York talk radio. Like McNabb, the Jets running back shoulders much of his team's offensive burden. Martin has gained more yards from scrimmage (1,501) than the Pro Bowl-bound Dillon (1,477) and has scored 10 of the 9-5 Jets' 31 offensive touchdowns.

Brian Urlacher. Chicago's drought for position player Pro Bowlers should be over. The rookie middle linebacker has been this year's "Freak," leading the Bears in tackles (110) and sacks (6.0).

The thinking that Urlacher has plenty of time to earn his trips to Hawaii is bunk. The kid from New Mexico has been better than advertisted. If he deserves to go, he should go.

Ed McCaffrey. You'd think the league's receptions leader -- on the red-hot, playoff-bound Broncos, no less -- would get a free vacation at Waikiki. While Pro Bowl-bound Jimmy Smith has nearly identical numbers (82 catches and 1,155 yards vs. McCaffrey's 88 catches and 1,162 yards) with one fewer game played, McCaffrey has overcome injuries all season long to serve his usual role as Denver's most reliable receiver. He should be joining teammate Rod Smith in Hawaii.

Shannon Sharpe. Here we invoke the Tony Banks Exemption, which reads (enter any receiver on the Ravens) would have much better numbers if Banks could hit the broad side of a barn 10 yards away. Is Sharpe more deserving than Frank Wycheck, Tony Gonzalez's backup in the AFC. It's worth debating.

Kyle Turley. Turley, the seventh overall pick of the 1998 draft, has emerged as one of the nastiest tackles around. He's helped make the Saints' offensive line one of the best in the league, arguably second only to Denver's.

Joe Horn. While we're talking about those first-place Saints, why didn't this free-agent find with 82 catches (eight more than Terrell Owens) and 1,164 yards (31 more than Owens) make it? Owens' self-serving display of disrespect in Dallas alone should've kept him out of the Pro Bowl. Then again, it was against the Cowboys.
