Baxter Bits: Browns at Chargers

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Browns make their way to San Diego for the first time since 1995 as these teams renew acquaintances.

The Chargers own a 9-6-1 edge in the series standings and have prevailed in the last two meetings, including a 31-13 triumph in 1995 at San Diego.

The Browns are 4-4 in 8 previous road tilts in this series.

Numbers: The Browns have allowed 200 or more yards rushing in 5-of-12 contests in '99. They have forced seven turnovers in two wins but have totaled just nine takeaways in 10 losses in '99. The Browns have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in six straight games, and have committed two or more turnovers in four straight games. They have limited the opposition to 17 or fewer points in 10-of-12 contests in '99. Cleveland's offense has scored 17 touchdowns in 12 games in '99, seven by rookie WR Kevin Johnson. The Browns have scored 137 points in 12 games in '99, 42 by rookie WR Kevin Johnson.

In their last 27 games dating back to '98 (9-18), four Chargers quarterbacks (Ryan Leaf, Erik Kramer and Jim Harbaugh, as well as since-departed Craig Whelihan) have combined to throw just 20 touchdown passes, while totaling 54 interceptions and 25 fumbles. The Chargers have allowed 41 points in four wins, 211 points in seven losses in '99. They have committed 27 turnovers in 21 wins, 118 turnovers in 38 losses since '96. The Chargers have been limited to 17 or fewer points in 21 of their last 30 contests dating back to '97, and have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in 11 straight games.

Things to look for: Cleveland's offense is making finally strides as rookie QB Tim Couch looks more comfortable on a weekly basis. And if the Browns can find the end zone more than once, it may be enough to edge out a Chargers' squad that, with few exceptions, has had trouble putting points on the board. Mike Riley's mistake-prone squad most hold onto the football if they are to avoid the upset.

Etc.: The Browns have won two straight road games.

The Chargers have lost six straight games and been outscored a combined 184-76 in those six setbacks.
