The Packers make their way to the Windy City as the Bears are in position to sweep this storied rivalry for the first time since 1991 as these storied franchises battle for the 159th time overall. Four weeks ago at Lambeau Field (Week 9), Bears RB Glyn Milburn ran 49 yards for a score and QB Jim Miller (replacing injured starter Cade McNown) threw a 6-yard TD pass to WR Bobby Engram, but it was DE Bryan Robinson's block of Packers PK Ryan Longwell's 28-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds that proved to be the difference as the "Monsters of the Midway" snapped a 10-game losing streak to Green Bay, 14-13. While the Bears still own an 83-69-6 edge in the standings (including playoffs), the Packers have prevailed in 12 of the last 14 meetings dating back to the clubs' second encounter in 1992 despite this season's earlier setback. As for the Pack's last appearance at Soldier Field (Week 17 of '98), neither Green Bay (239) nor Chicago (281) managed 300 yards of total offense and the team each committed three turnovers, but Longwell's 18-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the Packers' 16-13 win. The Packers have won five straight and are 6-1 in their last six visits to Soldier Field dating back to 1992.
Numbers: In 15 games vs. Chicago, Packers QB Brett Favre is 12-3 as a starter, throwing for 3,531 yards, 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. In his last 11 games vs. the Bears, Favre is 10-1 as a starter, throwing for 2,570 yards, 26 TD passes and just 10 interceptions--throwing for 3 or more scores in 5 of those contests -- plus rushing for two touchdowns. After throwing 145 touchdown passes and just 56 interceptions in 64 games (1994-97), Favre has thrown 47 TD passes and 38 interceptions in his last 27 contests (1998-99). Since 1995 (85 games, including playoffs), Favre is 61-24, throwing for 148 touchdowns and just 46 interceptions in his 61 wins compared to 31 scores and 42 interceptions in 24 losses. Favre has thrown for 21,643 yards in those 85 games. In his last eight games, Bears WR Marcus Robinson has totaled 47 receptions for 905 yards (19.3 avg.) and six touchdowns, totaling 100 or more yards receiving in four of those contests. In 1995, since-departed Bears QB Erik Kramer (9-7) threw a team-record 29 touchdown passes, just 10 interceptions and was sacked only 15 times--the only quarterback in the NFL to take every snap from center that season. In their last 60 games (1996-99), eight Bears quarterbacks have seen action (Shane Matthews, Cade McNown and Jim Miller, as well as since-departed Dave Krieg, Steve Stenstrom, Rick Mirer, Moses Moreno and Kramer), amassing an 20-40 record, throwing 65 TD passes, 69 interceptions while being sacked 122 times. The Bears have forced 24 turnovers in 12 games in '99, this after totaling just 28 takeaways in 16 games in '98. They have totaled 31 sacks in 12 games in '99, this after finishing tied for last in the NFL in sacks (28) in 16 games in '98. Including playoffs (94 games), the Bears have allowed 553 points in 39 wins (14.2 PPG), 1,512 points in 55 losses (27.5 PPG) the last six seasons (1994-99). The Bears have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games. The Packers have scored 154 points in six wins, 58 points in five losses in '99. The Packers have forced 17 turnovers in six wins, but have totaled just 11 takeaways in five losses in '99. They have committed seven turnovers in six wins, 16 turnovers in five losses in '99. The Packers have forced two or more turnovers in six straight games. They have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in 4 straight games. Green Bay has not lost a fumble in four straight games.
Things to look for: The sudden loss of QB Jim Miller can't do much for the psyche of the Bears, who had a chance to jump into the thick of the NFC Central race but woke up too later on Thanksgiving Day at Pontiac. Meanwhile, the rejuvenated Packers won't be overconfident knowing they've already lost once to Dick Jauron's improved club. Even hurting, look for a lot of Packers" RB Dorsey Levens. Etc.: Packers QB Brett Favre (229) needs three touchdown passes to tie Steve Young (232) for 15th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown pass. Favre (29,673) needs 327 yards to become the 23rd player in NFL history to total 30,000 passing yards. The Packers are just 7-6 vs. divisional rivals dating back to 1998 (3-2 in '99), this after going a combined 15-2 (including playoffs) vs. NFC Central rivals in 1996 (7-1) and '97 (8-1). |
