Baxter Bits: Chiefs at Broncos

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Chiefs head to Mile High Stadium to battle the Broncos (off last week) in position to sweep this always-entertaining AFC West rivalry for the first time since 1995.

Back in Week 2 at Arrowhead Stadium, Chiefs RB Kimble Anders rushed for 142 yards, PK Pete Stoyanovich added four field goals and the Kansas City defense forced four turnovers as Gunther Cunningham got his first victory as Chiefs' head coach, 26-10.

While Kansas City still has the edge in the overall standings (44-35, including playoffs), the Broncos own a two-game edge (11-9) in the 20 overall meetings during the '90s and have prevailed in five of the last seven battles (including playoffs) dating back to the teams' second meeting in 1996 despite this season's earlier loss.

As for the Chiefs' last visit to Mile High Stadium (Week 14 of '98), Kansas City jumped out to a 21-7 first-quarter advantage and later took a 31-21 lead with 9:25 to play, but since-departed Broncos QB John Elway led his team to a pair of late touchdowns, including a 24-yard TD toss to TE Shannon Sharpe with 3:34 to play, to give the Broncos a wild 35-31 win.

The Chiefs have lost three straight and are just 2-14 in their last 16 trips to Denver dating back to 1983.

Numbers: The Chiefs are an NFL-best plus-17 (34-17) in turnover differential in 1999, and an astounding league-best plus-124 (354-230) in turnover differential in the 1990s. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 704 points in 26 wins, 264 points in 18 losses dating back to '97. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown 97 touchdown passes compared to just 32 interceptions in 70 victories, while throwing just 36 TD passes and 62 interceptions in 43 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 74 takeaways in 26 wins, 28 takeaways in 18 losses dating back to '97. The Chiefs have totaled 19 sacks in six wins, six sacks in five losses in '99. The Chiefs have forced two or more turnovers in 12 straight games dating back to '98.

Including playoffs (1997-99), the Broncos are 36-4 when they total more rushing attempts than their opponent, 1-9 when Denver's opponent totals more rushing attempts. The Broncos have forced 12 turnovers in four wins, seven turnovers in seven losses in '99. They have allowed two or more touchdown passes in four straight games. The Broncos have forced two or more turnovers in three straight games.

Things to look for: Just when Kansas City's season looked as if it was coming apart, the usual win over the Raiders and Tampa's upset of the Seahawks has Gunther Cunningham's team back in the playoff hunt. But Mile High Stadium has always been a house of horrors for the Chiefs, who will see Broncos' QB Brian Griese this week and plenty of rookie RB Olandis Gary as Mike Shanahan's club prepares to play spoiler.

Etc.: Chiefs PK Pete Stoyanovich (264) needs one field goal to tie Kevin Butler (265) for 15th place on the NFL's all-time field goals list. WR Andre Rison (694) needs five catches to tie Gary Clark (699) for 12th place on the NFL's all-time receptions list. Rison (694) needs six catches to become the 12th player in NFL history with 700 career receptions.

The Broncos are 5-9 in their last 14 regular-season contests dating back to '98. After going 3-5 vs. AFC West foes during his first season with Denver in 1995, Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is 24-6 vs. divisional competition (including 1-0 in playoffs) since 1996.
