The Seahawks make their way to Oakland in position to sweep this AFC West rivalry for the second time in three years. Nine weeks ago on a Sunday night (ESPN) at the Kingdome, Jon Gruden's Raiders jumped out to a 21-9 third-quarter lead, but Seahawks QB Jon Kitna would finish the evening throwing for 213 yards and a pair of scores (1 INT) and PK Todd Peterson's 45-yard field early in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as Seattle rallied for a 22-21 triumph. Despite the loss, Oakland still owns a 24-21 overall edge in the standings (including playoffs) and has prevailed in 13 of the 19 encounters in the 1990s. As for the 'Hawks' last trip to Oakland (Week 11 of '98), Seattle jumped out to a 10-0 second-quarter lead, but Gruden's team rallied for a 20-17 victory thanks to 13 fourth quarter points, including since-departed PK Greg Davis' 38-yard field goal with just :11 to play which broke a 17-all tie. Despite last year's loss, the Seahawks are 3-2 in their last five road tilts in this rivalry dating back to 1994, the Raiders' final season in Los Angeles.
Numbers: Since 1996, the Seahawks have given up 502 points in 31 wins (16.2 PPG), 726 points in 28 losses (25.9 PPG). In their last 27 games dating back to 1998, the Seahawks' defense/special teams have scored 17 touchdowns (10 interception returns, 2 fumble returns, 3 punt returns, 1 kickoff return, 1 blocked field goal return). The Seahawks have limited the opposition to 17 or fewer points in 7-of-11 contests in '99. They have committed two or more turnovers in five straight games. After committing just 14 turnovers in their first eight games (6-2) in 1998, the Raiders have committed 51 turnovers in their last 19 contests (7-12). After allowing just 175 points in their first 10 games in 1998 (7-3), the Raiders have allowed 407 points in their last 17 games (6-11).
Things to look for: Mike Holmgren's surging club got a taste of humble pie following the holiday as the Bucs' aggressive defensive schemes harassed Seahawks' QB Jon Kitna into a plethora of mistakes. And while the bend-and-break-later-in-the-game Raiders' defense has been inconsistent, it's more than capable of presenting problems for a Seattle club that is no sure thing yet in the perplexing AFC West. Etc.: The Seahawks are 19-41 vs. divisional competition since 1992 (3-1 in '99). After opening 7-3 under head coach Jon Gruden, the Raiders are 6-11 in their last 17 games dating back to '98. The Raiders own a 105-45-3 record (115-47-3, including playoffs) at the Oakland Coliseum, this compared to a 64-36 mark (69-38, including playoffs) at the L.A. Coliseum from 1982-94. Raiders WR Tim Brown (749) needs one catch to tie both Michael Irvin and Charlie Joiner (750) for 9th place on the NFL's all-time receptions list. Brown (10,561) needs 155 yards to tie Stanley Morgan (10,716) for 13th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Brown has caught at least one pass in 103 straight games. |
