Baxter Bits: Titans at Ravens

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Titans head to Baltimore in position to sweep this short-lived AFC Central series for the second straight year.

Eight weeks ago at Adelphia Coliseum (Week 5), Tennessee's defense kept Baltimore out of the end zone while Titans' QB Neil O'Donnell's 27-yard touchdown pass to WR Yancey Thigpen in the third quarter proved to be the difference as Jeff Fisher's club eeked out a 14-11 victory.

Tennessee has now won three straight and owns a 5-2 edge in this setting, with the Titans sweeping the season series in 1996 and '98 and the Ravens managing that feat in '97.

As for the Tennessee's last appearance in Baltimore (Week 6 of '98), Titans QB Steve McNair threw for 207 yards (1 INT) and ran 40 yards for a score in the first quarter, the only touchdown of the game, as Fisher's team held off the Ravens, 12-8.

The Titans own a 2-1 edge in three road tilts in this series dating back to 1996.

Worth noting that each of the last four meetings between these clubs has been decided by four or fewer points.

Numbers: After giving up just five touchdown passes in their first seven games, the Titans have allowed 36 TD passes in their last 20 contests dating back to '98. The Titans have totaled four or more sacks in five straight games. QB Steve McNair has scored at least one touchdown in three straight games.

The Ravens have scored 256 points in 10 wins, 209 points in 17 losses dating back to '98. They have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in 3 straight games. The Ravens have allowed three or more sacks in three straight games.

Things to look for: Assured of their first winning season under head coach Jeff Fisher, the Titans still haven't convinced a lot of people that they are a legitimate playoff contender as they lackadaiscally stroll through their AFC Central rivals. But QB Steve McNair and RB Eddie George will find the Baltimore defense formidable as Tennessee's offense prefers to play it close to the vest, which may prove costly.

Etc.: The Titans have won three straight games. They have played 6-of-11 games in '99 decided by three or fewer points. Since '95, the Titans are 11-9 at home vs. AFC Central foes and 13-6 on the road in divisional contests. The Titans are 14-1 vs. AFC Central rivals, 3-9 vs. the rest of the NFL dating back to '98. PK Al Del Greco (1,425) needs 14 points to tie Jim Turner (1,439) for 9th place on the NFL's all-time scoring list. Since entering the NFL in 1996, the Ravens are 9-22 vs. AFC Central rivals (4 of those wins vs. the Bengals) and 11-16-1 vs. the rest of the league.
