Baxter Bits: Panthers at Packers

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Panthers head north to Lambeau Field for the first time ever in the regular season as these clubs square off for the fourth consecutive season.

Including playoffs, Green Bay owns a 3-0 overall advantage in the series standings, including a wild 37-30 triumph a year ago (Week 4) at Ericsson Stadium in the teams' last encounter as Packers QB Brett Favre threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns (3 INTs), part of a 487-yard afternoon by the Green Bay offense.

The Panthers' only previous appearance at Lambeau Field resulted in a 30-13 setback in the 1996 NFC Championship Game.

Numbers: The Panthers have committed 100 turnovers in their last 44 games (16-28) dating back to '97, totaling 23 turnovers in 16 wins and 77 turnovers in 28 losses. They have amassed 38 takeaways in 16 wins, 37 takeaways in 28 losses dating back to '97. The Panthers have allowed 215 points in 16 wins, 795 points in 28 losses dating back to '97. In 43 regular-season games with Carolina (1996, 1998-99), OLB Kevin Greene has totaled 38.5 sacks (14.5 in '96, 15.0 in '98, 9.0 in '99). The Panthers have scored 31 or more points in five of their last nine contests. They have scored 156 points in five wins, 126 points in seven losses in '99. TE Wesley Walls has scored at least one touchdown in four straight games.

After throwing 145 touchdown passes and just 56 interceptions in 64 games (1994-97), Packers QB Brett Favre has thrown 48 TD passes and 40 interceptions in his last 28 contests (1998-99). Since 1995 (86 games, including playoffs), Favre is 62-24, throwing for 149 touchdowns and just 48 interceptions in his 62 wins compared to 31 scores and 42 interceptions in 24 losses. Favre has thrown for 21,798 yards in those 86 games. The Packers have scored 189 points in seven wins, 58 points in five losses in '99. The Packers have forced 19 turnovers in seven wins, but have totaled just 11 takeaways in five losses in '99. The Packers have committed 10 turnovers in seven wins, 16 turnovers in five losses in '99. They have forced two or more turnovers in seven straight games.

Things to look for: Despite giving the Rams all they could handle, the Panthers' defense is still a liability and now must deal with a revitalized Green Bay attack that should take advantage of Carolina's shoddy play against the run. Still, the Packers' inconsistent secondary will have its hands full with Panthers' QB Steve Beuerlein and his receivers, meaning the scoreboard operator will be busy again.

Etc.: The Panthers are 16-28 in their last 44 games (1997-99) after finishing 12-4 and winning the NFC West title in 1996. Including playoffs, the Panthers are 36-42 in their 78-game history (1995-99), 19-19 vs. the NFC West and 17-23 against the rest of the NFL.

The Packers have won three straight games. Since 1992 (including playoffs), the Packers are 51-7 at Lambeau Field (including 5-0 in playoffs). Including playoffs, the Packers have won 48 of their last 52 at Lambeau Field. QB Brett Favre (230) needs two touchdown passes to tie Steve Young (232) for 15th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown pass. Favre (29,828) needs 172 yards to become the 23rd player in NFL history to total 30,000 passing yards.
