The Giants head north to Buffalo to face the Bills (off last week) as this interconference series is renewed once again. Including postseason, Buffalo owns a 5-3 overall edge in the series standings and have prevailed in the last five regular-season meetings and five of the last six overall encounters dating back to 1978, their lone loss over that stretch an unforgettable 20-19 setback in Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium. As for the clubs' last regular-season battle, the Bills posted a 23-20 Sunday night overtime victory (TNT) at East Rutherford on opening weekend of 1996. The Giants have dropped three straight and are just 1-3 lifetime at Orchard Park dating back to 1975, their last visit to Ralph Wilson Stadium resulting in a 17-14 Sunday night loss (TNT) in 1993.
Numbers: In 27 starts dating back to 1997 (17 with Panthers, 7 with Saints, 3 with Giants), Giants QB Kerry Collins has thrown 13 touchdown passes and just four interceptions in nine wins, 14 TD passes and 36 interceptions in 18 losses. Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Giants have committed just 30 turnovers in 30 wins, 76 turnovers in 30 losses and a tie. The Giants have scored 341 points and committed just 15 turnovers in 14 wins, while scoring just 171 points and committing 36 turnovers in 14 losses dating back to 1998. They have forced 35 turnovers and totaled 52 sacks in 14 wins, while totaling just nine takeaways and 29 sacks in 14 losses dating back to '98. The Bills have committed eight turnovers and allowed nine sacks in eight wins while committing 12 turnovers and allowing 12 sacks in 4 losses in '99. They have allowed 79 points in eight wins, 94 points in four losses in '99. WR Eric Moulds has scored at least one touchdown in his last seven games. The Bills have limited the opposition to 17 or fewer points in five straight games. They have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in five straight games, and have totaled three or more sacks in three straight games.
Things to look for: After lying dormant for most of the season, the Giants' offense awoke in a big way against the Jets, and Jim Fassel is hoping QB Kerry Collins and company can take that momentum into this contest with the Bills, who may be the only team in the AFC East with a legitimate shot of catching the red-hot Colts. New York's shaky defense won't be able to catch up with Bills' QB Doug Flutie. Etc.: Including playoffs, the Giants are 15-7-1 vs. NFC East opponents and just 9-13 (0-1 in playoffs) vs. the rest of the NFL under head coach Jim Fassel (1997-99). The Giants are just 7-12 vs. AFC teams dating back to 1995 (1-2 in '99). The Bills are 28-10 vs. NFC competition during the regular season since 1990 (2-0 in '99), however they're 0-4 in Super Bowl competition. They are 13-1 vs. the NFC East since 1990 in the regular season, 0-4 in Super Bowls. The Bills are 82-22 at home (including 9-1 in playoffs) since '88. WR Andre Reed (12,990) needs 10 yards to become just the 5th player in NFL history with 13,000 receiving yards. Reed (12,290) needs 99 yards to tie Steve Largent (13,089) for 4th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Reed (86) needs 2 touchdown catches to tie Don Maynard (88) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown receptions list. Reed (87) needs one touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list. Bills RB Thurman Thomas (86) need one touchdown to tie Lance Alworth and Andre Reed (87) for 20th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list. PK Steve Christie (241) needs 2 field goals to tie Jim Breech (243) for 18th place on the NFL's all-time field goals list. |
