Baxter Bits: Chargers at Seahawks

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Chargers make their way to the Kingdome in position to sweep this rivalry for the first time since 1995.

Eight weeks ago at Qualcomm Stadium (Week 6), Chargers QB Erik Kramer threw four interceptions but led his team to a pair of field goals in the final three minutes, PK John Carney's 41-yard boot on the final play of the game the difference as San Diego snapped a five-game losing streak in this series with a 13-10 triumph.

The Chargers now own a one-game edge (21-20) in this divisional series and have been the better team this decade, owning an 11-8 advantage in this rivalry in the 1990s.

As for the Bolts' last appearance at the Kingdome (Week 15 of '98), Seahawks' QB Jon Kitna overcame three interceptions (1 returned for a score by Chargers' DT Jamal Williams) by throwing for 140 yards and a touchdown, plus ran for another score, as the 'Hawks posted a 38-17 victory.

The Chargers have dropped three straight at Seattle dating back to 1996 and are 4-5 in their last nine road tilts in this series dating back to 1990, one of those victories a 24-10 win in 1994 at the University of Washington's Husky Stadium (the Seahawks' temporary home for 3 games that year while repairs were taking place at the Kingdome).

Numbers: In their last 28 games dating back to '98 (10-18), four Chargers quarterbacks (Ryan Leaf, Erik Kramer and Jim Harbaugh, as well as since-departed Craig Whelihan) have combined to throw just 20 touchdown passes, while totaling 54 interceptions and 26 fumbles. The Chargers have allowed 184 points in 14 wins, 845 points in 30 losses dating back to '97. They have allowed 51 points in five wins, 211 points in seven losses in '99. The Chargers have committed 28 turnovers in 22 wins, 118 turnovers in 38 losses since '96. They have totaled 25 takeaways and 39 sacks in 10 wins, 23 takeaways and 29 sacks in 18 losses dating back to '98.

Seahawks QB Jon Kitna has thrown two touchdown passes and seven interceptions in his last two games (0-2), after 16 TD passes and just six interceptions in his first nine contests (7-2) in '99. The Seahawks have committed 10 turnovers in their last two games (0-2), this after committing 17 turnovers in their first 10 contests (8-2) in '99. Since 1996, the Seahawks have given up 502 points in 31 wins (16.2 PPG), 756 points in 29 losses (26.1 PPG). Since 1996, they have allowed 140 or more yards rushing in 22-of-60 games, 180-plus yards rushing in eight of those contests. WR Joey Galloway has totaled 120 receptions for 1,890 yards and 21 touchdowns, plus returned twopunts for scores, in his last 29 games dating back to 1997. In their last 28 games dating back to 1998, the Seahawks' defense/special teams have scored 17 touchdowns (10 interception returns, 2 fumble returns, 3 punt returns, 1 kickoff return, 1 blocked field goal return). The Seahawks have limited the opposition to 17 or fewer points in 7-of-12 contests in '99. They have committed two or more turnovers in six straight games.

Things to look for: After looking like a runaway winner in the usually-tough AFC West, the Seahawks have hit rocky times due mainly to their inability to hang onto the football. But Mike Holmgren's squad might not have to play their best against a Chargers' team that has fallen hard following that mirage-like 4-1 start. Seattle's pass rush will get to QB Jim Harbaugh, and eventually to Ryan Leaf?

Etc.: The Chargers have lost three straight road games. The Seahawks are 19-42 vs. divisional competition since 1992 (3-2 in '99).
