The Cardinals make their way to the Georgia Dome for the first time since 1994 as these teams collide for the eighth time in the 1990s. Arizona owns a 13-6 advantage in this series and have prevailed in the last two meetings, including a 29-26 triumph in 1997 at Sun Devil Stadium in the latest battle between the clubs. The Cards are 6-5 lifetime at Atlanta dating back to 1966, but are 1-2 lifetime at the Georgia Dome dating back to 1992. Numbers: The Cardinals have scored 115 points in their last five games (4-2), this after scoring just 92 points in their first eight contests (2-6) in '99. Including playoffs, the Cardinals have forced 44 turnovers in 16 wins, but have just 25 takeaways in 16 losses dating back to '98. The Cardinals have scored 130 points in six wins, 77 points in eight losses in '99. They have been outscored a combined 104-19 in the first quarter in 14 games in '99. The Cardinals have forced two or more turnovers in four straight games. They have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in four straight games. The Falcons own an NFL-worst minus-20 turnover differential (15-35) in 14 games in '99, this after leading the NFL with a plus-20 turnover differential (44-24) in 16 games in '98. The Falcons have recovered five opponent's fumble in 14 games in '99, this after leading the NFL with 25 opponent's fumble recoveries in '98. They have committed two or more turnovers in three straight games and 10-of-14 contests in '99. Including playoffs, the Falcons have scored 551 points in 19 wins (29.0 PPG), but just 174 points in 14 losses (12.4 PPG) dating back to '98.
Things to look for: While the Cardinals still have remote playoff hopes, it won't be easy considering Vince Tobin's squad must close out the season on the road. And since Arizona's offense remains one of the most inconsistent units in the league, it figures to be a tough outing against a Falcons' squad that can still get after the quarterback, bad news for mistake-prone Cardinals' QB Jake Plummer. Etc.: Including playoffs, the Falcons are 24-17 with QB Chris Chandler as the starter while Falcons' backup quarterbacks are 2-6 dating back to '97. PK Morten Andersen has scored at least 1 point in an NFL-record 252 straight games. FS Eugene Robinson (56) needs one interception to tie Bobby Boyd, Johnny Robinson, Mel Blount and Everson Walls (57) for 9th place on the NFL's all-time interception list. |
