Baxter Bits: Jaguars at Titans

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Jaguars head to Adelphia Coliseum as Titans are in position to sweep this competitive AFC Central rivalry for the first time ever.

Three months ago at ALLTEL Stadium (Week 3), Jacksonville owned a 17-7 lead heading into the third quarter but Titans PK Al Del Greco connected on a pair of field goals and QB Neil O'Donnell threw a 12-yard TD pass to TE Michael Roan with just 3:26 to play to give Tennessee a 20-17 advantage. Jaguars QB Mark Brunell guided his team down the field and to the Titans 3-yard line, but CB Samari Rolle intercepted Brunell in the end zone to end the Jaguars' threat in a 20-19 triumph (the Titans took an intentional safety).

Despite this year's loss, the Jaguars have prevailed in five of the previous nine meetings between the clubs.

As for the Jaguars' last road tilt in this series (Week 4 of '98), Titans QB Steve McNair threw a pair of touchdown passes to WR Yancey Thigpen as Tennessee jumped out to a 19-7 second-quarter advantage, however Jaguars RB Fred Taylor would finish the afternoon with 116 yards rushing and a touchdown and PK Mike Hollis' 18-yard field goal with 9:45 remaining gave Jacksonville the lead for good as Tom Coughlin's club rallied for a 27-22 win at Vanderbilt Stadium.

The Jaguars are a perfect 4-0 as visitors in this rivalry as the road team owns an 8-1 mark in this series, with each of those nine contests decided by 8 or fewer points.

Numbers: Including playoffs, the Jaguars have seen a player gain 100 or more yards rushing in 14 of their last 32 games dating back to 1998, nearly tripling the number of 100-yard rushing performances (5) that the Jaguars managed in the regular- and postseason combined (5) during their first three years in the NFL (1995-97). Including playoffs, the Jaguars have forced 58 turnovers in 25 wins, eight turnovers in seven losses dating back to '98. They have allowed 149 points in 13 wins, 20 points in one loss in '99. After gaining a franchise-low 132 total yards in a 6-3 victory over the Ravens in Week 10, the Jaguars have totaled 2,055 yards (411.0 YPG) and scored 142 points in their last five contests (5-0). They have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in four straight games and 11-of-14 contests in '99. They have committed 10 turnovers in 13 wins, four turnovers in one loss in '99. The Jaguars have rushed for 160 or more yards in three straight games. WR Jimmy Smith has totaled 100 or more yards receiving in four of his last five games. They have totaled three or more sacks in 11-of-14 contests in '99. The Jaguars have totaled 54 sacks in 14 games in '99, this after totaling just 30 sacks in 16 games in '98.

The Titans have totaled 49 sacks in 14 games in '99, this after totaling just 30 sacks in 16 games in '98. After giving up just five touchdown passes in their first seven games, the Titans have allowed 43 TD passes in their last 23 contests dating back to 1998. QB Steve McNair has thrown one touchdown pass and seven interceptions in his last seven games.

Things to look for: A lot has been made of Jacksonville's less-than-scintillating competition and with good reason, but it's obvious that Tom Coughlin's club has played the most consistent football in the NFL this season, and their balance has enabled them to win games in many different fashions. While the Titans may be unbeaten at home, they will need a big effort to knock of the Jaguars once again.

Etc.: The Jaguars are in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season and have won 13 games during the regular season for the first time ever. They are 13-1 for the first time ever and have won 11 straight games for the first time in the team's 5-year history (1995-99). The Titans are in the playoffs for the first time since 1993, when the then-Houston Oilers finished 12-4 and won the AFC Central title under since-departed head coach Jack Pardee, eventually losing at home in the AFC Divisional Playoffs to Kansas City (28-20). Including playoffs, the Jaguars are 51-33 in their 84-game history (1995-99), including 28-12 vs. the AFC Central. The Jaguars have won seven straight road games. The Titans have won seven straight home games. The Titans are 14-2 in their last 16 games vs. divisional competition dating back to '98 (7-1 in '99).
