Baxter Bits: Cardinals at Packers

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Cardinals make their first appearance at Lambeau Field since 1984 as these clubs collide in the regular season for the first time since 1990.

Including playoffs, the Packers own a 40-21-4 edge in the series standings and have prevailed in the last 2 meetings, including a 24-21 victory in 1990 at Sun Devil Stadium in the most recent battle between the clubs.

The Cards' last appearance at Lambeau Field resulted in a 24-23 loss in 1984.

Including playoffs, the Cardinals have lost six straight road games in this series (5 at Lambeau Field, 1 at Milwaukee) dating back to 1955, their last road victory in this series a 39-17 triumph at Milwaukee in 1949 by the then-Chicago Cardinals.

The Cards' last win in Green Bay came a "mere" 52 seasons ago, a 14-10 win in 1947, also by the then-Chicago Cardinals.

Numbers: The Cardinals have scored 129 points in their last 7 games (4-3), this after scoring just 92 points in their first 8 contests (2-6) in '99. They have scored 130 points in 6 wins, 91 points in 9 losses in '99. They have been outscored a combined 111-19 in the first quarter in 15 games in '99. The Cardinals have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in 5 straight games.

After throwing 145 touchdown passes and just 56 interceptions in 64 games (1994-97), Packers QB Brett Favre has thrown 51 TD passes and 45 interceptions in his last 31 contests (1998-99). Since 1995 (89 games, including playoffs), Favre is 62-27, throwing for 149 touchdowns and just 48 interceptions in his 62 wins compared to 34 scores and 47 interceptions in 27 losses. Favre has thrown for 22,563 yards in those 89 games. The Packers have scored 189 points in 7 wins, 119 points in 8 losses in '99. They have forced 19 turnovers in 7 wins, but have totaled just 18 takeaways in 8 losses in '99. The Packers have committed 10 turnovers in 7 wins, 25 turnovers in 8 losses in '99. The Packers have committed two or more turnovers in four straight games.

Things to look for: Vince Tobin's club had high expectations coming into this season and made a late run at the playoffs in November, but the simple truth is that this team still needs a lot of work, as does struggling QB Jake Plummer, who never got untracked this year. The Packers can tell you something about disappointment, and if they miss the playoffs, Ray Rhodes' stay in Titletown could be very short.

Etc.: The Cardinals have lost three straight games. The Packers have lost three straight games. Since 1992 (including playoffs), the Packers are 51-8 at Lambeau Field (including 5-0 in playoffs). Including playoffs, Packers have won 48 of their last 53 at Lambeau Field. Cardinals WR Rob Moore (626) needs nine catches to move into 16th place on the NFL's all-time receptions list, passing Raymond Berry (631), Don Maynard (633) and Drew Hill (634). Packers QB Brett Favre (233) needs three touchdown passes to tie George Blanda (236) for 14th place and 4 touchdown passes to tie Jim Kelly (237) for 13th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown passes list
