Baxter Bits: Colts at Bills

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Colts head to Ralph Wilson Stadium in position to sweep this AFC East series for the first time since 1994.

Back on opening day at the RCA Dome (Week 1), Colts rookie RB Edgerrin James rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown and QB Peyton Manning threw for 284 yards and a pair of scores (2 INTs) as Jim Mora's club kicked off the season with an impressive 31-14 victory.

Despite this year's earlier loss, Buffalo owns a 33-24-1 edge in the series standings, due mainly to their recent domination as Bills have prevailed in 15 of the teams' last 20 meetings dating back to their second encounter in 1989.

As for the Colts' last appearance at Orchard Park (Week 12 of '98), Bills RB Antowain Smith ran for 107 yards and two more scores and the Bills outgained their guests in total yardage, 402-250, in a convincing 34-11 triumph.

The Colts have lost four straight and are just 1-10 in their last 11 trips to Buffalo dating back to 1988, their only victory over that span a 27-17 triumph in 1994.

Worth noting that despite this year's convincing win by the Colts, eight of the last 10 meetings between these clubs (dating back to 1994) have each been decided by seven or fewer points.

Numbers: After throwing just three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his first four games, Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 49 TD passes and 32 interceptions in his last 27 contests dating back to '98, throwing two or more touchdown passes in 16 of his last 26 games. However, Manning has thrown two or more interceptions in 10 of his last 24 contests. After allowing an AFC-high 62 sacks in 16 games in 1997, the Colts have allowed just 36 sacks in their last 31 games dating back to '98. After allowing 11 sacks in their first four games in 1998, the Colts have allowed just 25 sacks in their last 27 contests, giving up zero sacks in 13 of those 27 contests. They have allowed 237 points in 13 wins, 65 points in 2 losses in '99. WR Marvin Harrison has totaled 100 or more yards receiving in four straight games. RB Edgerrin James has scored at least one touchdown in four straight games.

The Bills have committed 13 turnovers and allowed 14 sacks in 10 wins while committing 14 turnovers and allowing 15 sacks in 5 losses in '99. They have committed two or more turnovers in three straight games. The Bills have allowed 110 points in 10 wins, 113 points in five losses in '99. RB Jonathan Linton has scored at least one touchdown in three straight games.

Things to look for: With an outside chance at home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, Jim Mora's Colts won't be taking this contest lightly as his surprising AFC East champions look to build up more momentum entering the postseason. On the other hand, the Bills have been inconsistent at best down the stretch and need a solid effort in all areas if they are to be a factor in the postseason.

Etc.: The Colts are AFC East champions for the first time since 1987 and are 13-2, their most victories in a season since 1968, when the then-Baltimore Colts finished 13-1 and advanced to Super Bowl III under since-departed head coach Don Shula. The Colts have won 11 straight games in the same season for the first time since 1964, when the then-Baltimore Colts won 11 straight games enroute to a 12-2 season under Shula. With a victory, the Colts can win 14 games during the regular season for the first time ever. RB Edgerrin James leads the NFL in rushing with 1,503 yards. James could become the first rookie to lead the NFL in rushing yardage since L.A. Rams RB Eric Dickerson (1,808 yards in 1983). He could become the first Colts' player since Dickerson (1,659 yards in 1988) to lead the NFL in rushing yardage. WR Marvin Harrison leads the NFL with 111 receptions; the last Colts' player to lead the NFL in receptions was then-Baltimore Colts RB Joe Washington (82 receptions in 1979). Harrison leads the NFL with 1,612 receiving yards. The last Colts' player to lead the NFL in receiving yardage was then-Baltimore Colts' WR Roger Carr (1,112 yards in 1976). The Colts are 13-2 in 1999 after finishing a combined 6-26 in 1997-98. They have won six straight road games.

The Bills are 68-31 (including 3-1 in playoffs) vs. AFC East competition since 1988, however they are just 26-22 vs. divisional foes since 1994 (including playoffs). The Bills are 82-23 at home (including 9-1 in playoffs) since '88. WR Andre Reed (13,072) needs 17 yards to tie Steve Largent (13,089) for 4th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Reed (936) needs 4 catches to tie Art Monk (940) for 2nd place on the NFL's all-time receptions list. Reed and teammate RB Thurman Thomas (87) need 1 touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list. RB Thurman Thomas (11,938) needs 62 yards to become just the 9th player in NFL history with 12,000 career rushing yards.
