Baxter Bits: Raiders at Chiefs

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Raiders head east to Arrowhead Stadium looking to end their misery in this suddenly-lopsided AFC West rivalry as Chiefs are in position to sweep this storied series for the eighth time in 10 seasons.

Five weeks ago at Oakland (Week 12), Jon Gruden's team held a 34-20 lead entering the fourth quarter but Chiefs' QB Elvis Grbac connected with TE Tony Gonzalez on a 73-yard touchdown, CB Cris Dishman returned a Raiders' fumble 40 yards for a score (his second TD of the afternoon) and PK Pete Stoyanovich booted a 44-yard field goal with :03 to play as Gunther Cunningham's club rallied for an improbable 37-34 win.

The Chiefs now own a 42-37-2 edge in this rivalry (including a 2-1 mark in playoff competition), due mainly to the fact that Kansas City has won five straight and are 18-2 vs. the Silver and Black since 1990 (including 1-0 in playoffs).

As for the Raiders' last appearance at Arrowhead Stadium (Week 1 of '98), Kansas City came up with five Raiders' turnovers and Chiefs' LB Derrick Thomas totaled six of his team's 10 sacks on the evening as the Chiefs jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead enroute to a 28-8 Sunday night triumph (ESPN).

Including playoffs, the Raiders have dropped 11 straight at Arrowhead Stadium (by a combined score of 231-100), their last victory in Kansas City a 27-17 triumph in 1988.

Numbers: After committing just 14 turnovers in their first eight games (6-2) in 1998, the Raiders have committed 56 turnovers in their last 23 contests (9-14). After allowing just 175 points in their first 10 games in 1998 (7-3), Raiders have allowed 472 points in their last 21 games (8-13).

The Chiefs are an NFL-best plus-20 (43-23) in turnover differential in 1999, and an astounding league-best plus-127 (363-236) in turnover differential in the 1990s. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown 102 touchdown passes compared to just 33 interceptions in 73 victories, while throwing just 38 TD passes and 65 interceptions in 44 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 83 takeaways in 29 wins, 28 takeaways in 19 losses dating back to '97. The Chiefs have totaled 27 sacks in nine wins, nine sacks in six losses in '99.

Things to look for: It's little wonder the Raiders' season has been so up-and-down as Jon Gruden's club has played one of the more strenuous schedules in the league. Gunther Cunningham's team got away from what they do best at the Kingdome last week, but still controls its own destiny. Kansas City's defense must regain its opportunistic touch if the Chiefs are to continue their hex over the Silver and Black.

Etc.: After opening 7-3 under head coach Jon Gruden, the Raiders are 8-13 in their last 21 games dating back to '98. Raiders WR Tim Brown (10,822) needs 34 yards to tie Gary Clark (10,856) for 12th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Brown has caught at least 1 pass in 107 straight games.
