Baxter Bits: Chargers at Broncos

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Chargers head to Mile High Stadium as Broncos look to extend their recent winning ways in this original AFL rivalry.

Eight weeks ago at Qualcomm Stadium (Week 9), Broncos rookie RB Olandis Gary ran for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns and the Denver defense limited the Bolts to 59 yards rushing and forced 4 turnovers as Mike Shanahan's team scored an easy 33-17 victory.

Denver now owns a 43-35-1 advantage in this series and have had the upper hand in recent years, prevailing in 5 straight and 18 of the last 25 meetings dating back to 1987.

As for the Bolts' last trip to Mile High Stadium (Week 10 of '98), Broncos RB Terrell Davis ran for just 69 yards but QB Bubby Brister threw for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns (1 INT) as Denver cruised to a 27-10 triumph.

The Chargers have lost four straight and are just 2-14 in their last 16 trips to Mile High Stadium dating back to 1983, their last win in Denver a 37-34 triumph in '94.

Numbers: In their last 31 games dating back to '98 (12-19), four Chargers quarterbacks (Ryan Leaf, Erik Kramer and Jim Harbaugh, as well as since-departed Craig Whelihan) have combined to throw just 22 touchdown passes, while totaling 56 interceptions and 32 fumbles. The Chargers have allowed 87 points in 7 wins, 223 points in 8 losses in '99. They have committed 30 turnovers in 24 wins, 119 turnovers in 39 losses since '96. They have totaled 28 takeaways and 45 sacks in 12 wins, 25 takeaways and 31 sacks in 19 losses dating back to '98. The Chargers have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in four straight games.

Broncos RB Olandis Gary has carried 51 times for 378 yards and 1 touchdown in his last 2 games, rushing for 183 and 185 yards, respectively, in those 2 contests. Including playoffs (1997-99), the Broncos are 38-4 when they total more rushing attempts than their opponent, 1-11 when Denver's opponent totals more rushing attempts. They have forced 14 turnovers in six wins, eight turnovers in nine losses in '99. The Broncos have totaled three or more sacks in three straight games. The Broncos have not lost a fumble in four straight games.

Things to look for: While it's been a less-than-memorable season for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, Mike Shanahan has to be pleased with the effort he's gotten from his players, especially youngsters like rookie RB Olandis Gary and Pro Bowl-bound DT Trevor Pryce. Mike Riley's Chargers have made strides in his first season, but reaching .500 is unlikely at frigid and hostile Mile High.

Etc.: The Chargers won five games in '98 by a combined total of 13 points, 7 games in 1999 by 66 points. After going 3-5 vs. AFC West foes during his first season with Denver in 1995, Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is 25-7 vs. divisional competition (including 1-0 in playoffs) since 1996. PK Jason Elam has converted 264 consecutive PATs, second-longest streak in NFL history.
