Baxter Bits: Dolphins vs. Colts

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Dolphins head to the RCA Dome to face the Colts (off last week) looking to extend its dominance in this usually-entertaining series.

While Miami has dominated this AFC East rivalry historically (40-19, including a 21-0 victory in the 1971 AFC Championship Game), Indy has held its own as of late as the Colts have prevailed in five of the last nine encounters dating back to the teams' second meeting in 1994.

Last year, the Dolphins swept this series for the first time since 1993. On opening day at the RCA Dome (Week 1), Dolphins RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar ran for 108 yards and a score and Miami's defense sacked Colts QB Peyton Manning four times and forced him into three interceptions, one of those thefts returned 21 yards for a touchdown by Dolphins CB Terrell Buckley, as Jimmy Johnson's team posted a 24-15 victory and spoiled Colts head coach Jim Mora's return to the NFL.

Nine weeks later at Pro Player Stadium (Week 10), Dolphins QB Dan Marino threw a pair of touchdown passes to WR O.J. McDuffie (61 and 6 yards) as Johnson's club built a 27-0 lead enroute to a 27-14 victory.

While the Dolphins are 9-6 lifetime at the RCA Dome dating back to 1984, the Dolphins are just 1-4 in their last five trips to Indianapolis dating back to 1994.

Numbers: Dolphins QB Dan Marino owns a 21-10 record as a starter vs. the Colts and has thrown for 6,831 yards, 49 touchdowns and just 17 interceptions in 31 career meetings. Since 1996 (including playoffs), under head coach Jimmy Johnson, Dolphins are 30-5 when they run the ball 25 or more times, 0-19 when they fail to run the ball at least 25 times. Including playoffs, the Dolphins have allowed 156 points in 13 wins, 224 points in 8 losses dating back to '98. Since 1996 (including playoffs), under head coach Jimmy Johnson, the Dolphins have totaled 92 sacks and 78 takeaways in 30 wins but just 33 QB traps and 32 takeaways in 24 losses. Including playoffs, the Dolphins have allowed just nine sacks in 13 wins, 19 sacks in eight losses dating back to '98.

After throwing just three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his first four games, Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 30 TD passes and 22 interceptions in his last 15 contests dating back to '98, throwing two or more touchdown passes in 10 of his last 14 games. However, Manning has thrown two or more interceptions in eight of his last 12 contests. After allowing an AFC-high 62 sacks in 16 games in 1997, the Colts have allowed just 22 sacks in their last 19 games dating back to '98. After allowing 11 sacks in their first 4 games in 1998, they have allowed just 11 sacks in their last 15 contests, giving up zero sacks in three straight games and 10 of those 15 contests. QB Peyton Manning has thrown two or more touchdown passes in three straight games. WR Marvin Harrison has totaled 100 or more yards receiving and scored at least one touchdown in three straight games.

Things To Look For: Since their impressive outing against the Broncos, the Miami offense has been virtually non-existent in their last 2 outings as Dan Marino and company aren't making very many big plays. It's been just the opposite for the well-rested, who probably can't wait to get back on the field after their impressive start, most notably WR Marvin Harrison, who will give the Dolphins' corners a lot to think about.

Etc.: Since 1996 (including playoffs), under head coach Jimmy Johnson, the Dolphins are 15-12 vs. AFC East foes. Since 1994, (including playoffs), 50 of the Colts' 87 games have been decided by seven or fewer points, six of those in overtime.
