The Patriots make their way to Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since 1995 looking to further narrow the Chiefs' advantage in this original AFL series that dates back to 1960 (when the then-Boston Patriots squared off against the then-Dallas Texans). While the Chiefs own a 14-8-3 advantage in the standings, the Patriots posted an overwhelming 40-10 triumph last season at Foxboro (Week 6) in the most recent encounter between the clubs. The Patriots have dropped four straight at Kansas City dating back to 1968 and own a 2-8-1 road record in this well-traveled rivalry (1-2 in Dallas from 1960-62, 1-6-1 at Kansas City from 1963-95), including an 0-2 lifetime mark at Arrowhead Stadium dating back to '92. Numbers: Including playoffs, the Patriots have outscored the opposition a combined 639-358 points in 24 wins, and been outscored a combined 372-196 points in 15 losses dating back to '97. The Patriots have totaled 56 takeaways in 23 wins, 20 takeaways in 16 losses dating back to '97, including playoffs. RB Terry Allen has scored at least one touchdown in four straight games. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 582 points in 22 wins, 218 points in 15 losses dating back to '97. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown 92 touchdown passes compared to just 29 interceptions in 66 victories, while throwing just 34 TD passes and 60 interceptions in 40 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 60 takeaways in 22 wins, 19 takeaways in 15 losses dating back to '97. After giving up just 63 points in their first five games (4-1), the Chiefs have allowed 372 points in their last 15 contests (5-10) dating back to '98. The Chiefs have forced two or more turnovers in five straight games dating back to '98. The Chiefs have totaled two or more interceptions in 3 straight games. They have rushed for 120 or more yards in three straight games. Things To Look For: A year ago, the Chiefs appeared on their way to another playoff appearance until they made a stop in Foxboro, their 30-point loss to the Patriots setting the tone for the rest of their season. Now Pete Carroll's club is on a roll and playing with confidence, but enter always-hostile Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City's improved attack should have some success against New England's shaky defense. Etc.: The Patriots are 4-0 for the second time in three seasons (1997-99) and just the fourth time in the team's 40-year history (1960-99). Since 1984 (including playoffs), the Patriots are 9-23 vs. AFC West opponents (1-1 in playoffs). |
