Baxter Bits: Giants vs. Cardinals

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Giants make their way to Sun Devil Stadium looking to continue its recent dominance in this NFC East rivalry.

New York has nearly doubled Big Red's wins in the series standings (73-37-2), prevailing in four straight, seven of the last eight encounters and 22 of the last 28 meetings dating back to 1985.

A year ago, New York swept this series for the second straight season. In Week 7 at East Rutherford, since-departed Giants QB Danny Kanell threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns and RB Gary Brown added 108 yards rushing as Jim Fassel's team cruised to a 34-7 win.

Seven weeks later at Sun Devil Stadium (Week 14), Brown ran for 124 yards while New York's defense limited the Cardinals to 74 yards rushing and forced 3 turnovers as Fassel's club completed the sweep, 23-19.

The Giants are 6-5 in their 11 previous visits to Sun Devil Stadium dating back to 1988.

Numbers: In their last four meetings with Arizona (4-0) dating back to 1997, the Giants have outgained the Cardinals on the ground a combined 781-213 in those 4 contests. In 24 starts dating back to '97 (17 with Panthers, 7 with Saints), Giants QB Kerry Collins has thrown 10 touchdown passes and just 4 interceptions in 8 wins, 13 TD passes and 32 interceptions in 16 losses. Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Giants have committed just 27 turnovers in 26 wins, 61 turnovers in 26 losses and a tie. The Giants have forced 2 or more turnovers in 22 of their last 32 games (23-of-33, including playoffs) dating back to '97. They have scored 243 points and committed just 12 turnovers in 10 wins, while scoring just 112 points and committing 21 turnovers in 10 losses dating back to '98. The Giants have forced 28 turnovers and totaled 42 sacks in 10 wins, while totaling just five takeaways and 20 sacks in 10 losses dating back to '98.

Cardinals QB Jake Plummer has thrown two or more interceptions in four straight games (6, including playoffs dating back to '98). Including playoffs, the Cardinals have forced 35 turnovers in 11 wins, but have just 18 takeaways in 11 losses dating back to '98. The Cardinals have allowed 358 points in their last 14 games (6-8) dating back to '98, including playoffs. The Cardinals have committed four or more turnovers in four straight games. They have been limited to 16 or fewer points in three straight games.

Things To Look For: New York's offense continues to be a liability, although the Giants' ground game looked better with RB Gary Brown back in the fold. Still, it's now up to QB Kerry Collins to jump start Jim Fassel's passing attack, which may be easier said than done. Nothing has gone right for the Cardinals to date, and their defense figures to have its hands full once again with the Big Blue's running attack.

Etc.: Including playoffs, Giants are 13-4-1 vs. NFC East opponents under head coach Jim Fassel (1997-99). The Cardinals have lost 3 straight games. The Cardinals are 19-25 at home vs. NFC East competition (2-2 in '98) since moving to Sun Devil Stadium in 1988. IF HE PLAYS: Cardinals WR Rob Moore (596) needs four catches to become the 21st player in NFL history with 600 career receptions.
