Baxter Bits: Steelers vs. Bills

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Steelers make their second appearance at Ralph Wilson Stadium this year (Bills posted a 16-14 victory this summer) and their first regular-season visit to Orchard Park since 1992 looking to extend their recent winning ways in this always-interesting rivalry.

Including playoffs, the Steelers own a 10-8 overall advantage in this series and have prevailed in the four meetings, including a 24-6 triumph at Three Rivers Stadium on a Monday night in 1996 in the last regular-season clash between the clubs.

The Steelers have lost six straight road games in this series and are 2-6 lifetime at Buffalo (1-0 at Memorial Stadium, 1-6 at Ralph Wilson Stadium), their last road victory in this setting a 28-17 victory in 1978.

Including playoffs, the home team owns a 14-4 record in this rivalry, including a 12-1 mark dating back to 1979.

Numbers: After not committing a turnover in their first two games (2-0), the Steelers have committed seven turnovers in their last two games (0-2) in '99. Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Steelers are 24-4 when limiting the opposition to 17 or fewer points, 8-20 when giving up more than 17 points. They have totaled 26 takeaways in nine wins while forcing just 13 turnovers in 11 losses dating back to '98.

The Steelers have allowed just 109 points in nine wins (15 or fewer points in 7 of those contests) while giving up 260 points in 11 losses dating back to '98. The Bills have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games.

Things To Look For: A matchup of teams that are nearly mirror images, with one huge exception. Both defenses have been remarkable, but Steelers QB Kordell Stewart needs to be more like Bills QB Doug Flutie, meaning tuck the ball away and head downfield when you need to make a play. This series has been dominated by the home team in recent years and you can look for more of the same today.

Etc.: The Bills have won three straight games. They are 79-21 at home (including 9-1 in playoffs) since '88. WR Andre Reed (12,674) needs 47 yards to tie Art Monk (12,721) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Reed (86) needs two touchdown catches to tie Don Maynard (88) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown receptions list. Reed (87) needs 1 touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list.
