The Packers make their first appearance at Qualcomm Stadium since Super Bowl XXXII while Chargers host this interconference series for the first time since 1993. Green Bay owns a 5-1 edge in this series and have prevailed in the last two meetings, including a 42-10 triumph in 1996 at Lambeau Field in the last encounter between these clubs. The Packers own a 3-0 road record in this series, their last visit to San Diego to face the Chargers resulting in a 20-13 Sunday night victory (ESPN) in 1993.
Numbers: Since 1995 (79 games, including playoffs), Packers QB Brett Favre is 58-21, throwing for 142 touchdowns and just 45 interceptions in his 58 wins compared to 28 scores and 35 interceptions in 21 losses. Favre has thrown for 20,208 yards in those 79 games. In his last 22 games (including playoffs) dating back to '97, Packers RB Dorsey Levens has carried 449 times for 1,800 yards and 11 touchdowns, plus caught 95 passes for 751 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Packers have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in 3 straight games. The Chargers own a plus-5 turnover differential (14-9) in five games in '99, this after an NFL-worst minus-24 turnover differential (27-51) in 16 games in '98. They have allowed 41 points in four wins, 27 points in one loss in '99. After committing 24 turnovers in their last four contests in '98, the Chargers have committed just nine turnovers in their first five games in '99. The Chargers have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in five straight games. They have limited the opposition to 14 or fewer points in three straight games and 4-of-5 contests in '99. They have committed two or more turnovers in three straight games. RB Natrone Means has scored at least one touchdown in his last three games. Things To Look For: One week after being drubbed by the Broncos in Denver, the Pack returns to the site of their last Super Bowl appearance, which should also brings back some unhappy memories. The Green Bay defense looked helpless at Mile High last Sunday, but should rebound against a San Diego attack that can't run the football. And don't look for another bad outing from Packers QB Brett Favre. Etc.: The Chargers are 4-1 for the first time since 1996, when they finished 8-8 and failed to qualify for the playoffsSince 1992, Packers are 21-9 vs. AFC teams (22-10, including Super Bowls XXXI and XXXII). They won five games in '98 by a combined total of 13 points, four games in 1999 by 47 points. The Chargers are 4-9 vs. NFC teams dating back to 1996 (1-0 in '99). |
