The Jets make their first appearance in Oakland since 1972 as the Raiders host this series for the first time since 1993. Including playoffs, the Raiders own a 16-12-2 edge in this series standings, however, the Jets eeked out a 23-22 victory in 1997 at the Meadowlands in the last meeting between these clubs. The Jets' last road tilt in this series resulted in a 24-20 loss to the then-L.A. Raiders at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1994. Numbers: Including playoffs, during the Bill Parcells Era with the Jets (1997-99), QB Vinny Testaverde has thrown 31 touchdown passes and just 11 interceptions while being sacked only 21 times in 17 games with the team. However, five other Jets quarterbacks (since-departed Neil O'Donnell and Glenn Foley, as well as Ray Lucas, Tom Tupa and Rick Mirer) have combined to throw 26 TD passes and 17 interceptions while being sacked 69 times. The Jets have allowed 21 sacks in six games in '99, this after allowing just 25 sacks in 16 games in '98. Including playoffs, the Jets have allowed just 189 points in 14 wins (17 or fewer points in 11 of those contests) while giving up 243 points in 10 losses in their last 24 games dating back to '98. They have committed just 18 turnovers in 14 wins, 26 turnovers in 10 losses dating back to '98, including playoffs. The Jets have allowed four or more sacks in 4-of-6 contests in '99. They have limited the opposition to 16 or fewer points in three straight games. In their first six games in '98, the Raiders have totaled 17 sacks and forced 16 turnovers, but have allowed 1,883 total yards (313.8 YPG) and 114 points. Things To Look For: It's back to Rick Mirer for Bill Parcells, who had to endure another painful loss as his team continues to make crucial mistakes at critical times. Meanwhile, Jon Gruden couldn't be happier with his unpredictable club as RB Tyrone Wheatley and company come off an impressive road victory at Buffalo. New York's offensive line will have its hands full with Raiders' DT Darrell Russell and friends. Etc.: The Raiders own a 103-43-3 record (113-45-3, including playoffs) at the Oakland Coliseum, this compared to a 64-36 mark (69-38, including playoffs) at the L.A. Coliseum from 1982-94. WR Tim Brown (10,012) needs 154 yards to tie Lance Alworth (10,266) for 15th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. |
