The Eagles make their way south to Miami for the first time since 1990 looking to further cut into the Dolphins' lead in this interconference setting. While Miami has prevailed in six of the previous nine battles between the clubs, the Eagles managed a 35-28 victory in 1996 at Veterans Stadium in the last regular-season encounter between these clubs. The Eagles are 0-4 lifetime at Miami (0-3 at Orange Bowl, 0-1 at Pro Player Stadium), their only previous appearance at the Dolphins' current home resulting in a 23-20 overtime loss on a Sunday night (ESPN) in 1990. Numbers: The Eagles have forced 17 turnovers in six games in '99, this after totaling an NFL-low 17 takeaways in 16 games in '98. They have totaled 13 interceptions in six games in '99, this after totaling just nine interceptions in 16 games in '98. Philadelphia has forced two or more turnovers in three straight games and 5-of-6 contests in '99. After scoring 21 points (3 offensive touchdowns) in the first quarter in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals, Eagles have scored just 53 points in their last 23 quarters in '99 and have scored just three offensive touchdowns in their last 23 quarters. Their offense has allowed 144 sacks in their last 38 games (1997-99), including 115 sacks in their last 29 contests dating back to '97. The Eagles have been limited to 17 or fewer points in 19 of their 22 contests dating back to '98. Their defense has allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 18 of their last 22 contests dating back to '98. The Eagles have limited the opposition to 16 or fewer points in three straight games. Since 1996 (including playoffs), under head coach Jimmy Johnson, the Dolphins are 32-5 when they run the ball 25 or more times, 0-19 when they fail to run the ball at least 25 times. In 11 home games dating back to '98 (including playoffs), the Dolphins have allowed just 138 points, 2,635 yards of total offense (239.5 YPG) and just eight offensive touchdowns. In his last two games, Dolphins WR Tony Martin has totaled 18 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns, totaling 100 or more yards and scoring one touchdown in each of those contests. The Dolphins have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in four straight games. Things To Look For: Off a pair of rousing road wins, the Dolphins head home back in first place in the tough AFC East. But what looked like a walk in the park a few weeks ago now looks like a little bit of a challenge as the revived Eagles come to town riding a two-game winning streak and armed with a very opportunistic defense, which figures to cause any quarterback (likely Damon Huard) plenty of angst. Etc.: The Eagles are 1-17-1 in their last 19 regular-season road games dating back to '97 (1-18-1, including the 1996 NFC Wild Card Game at San Francisco)Eagles' PK Norm Johnson (1,688) needs 11 points to tie Jan Stenerud (1,699) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time scoring list. Johnson has converted an NFL-record 283 consecutive PATs. Since Dan Marino took over as the Dolphins' starter in Week 6 vs. the Bills in 1983, Miami backups are just 8-10 starting for Marino, including just 1-9 in their last 10 games. The Dolphins are 73-29 lifetime in interconference games (1-0 in '99) dating back to 1970. Including playoffs, head coach Jimmy Johnson is 5-7 lifetime vs. the Eagles (5-6 with Cowboys from 1989-93, 0-1 with Dolphins in 1996). Since 1996, under Johnson, the Dolphins are just 6-7 vs. NFC competition. The Dolphins are 17-6 at home vs. NFC competition since moving to Joe Robbie Stadium in 1987. They are 13-3 lifetime at home vs. NFC East competition, the lone losses coming to the Giants in '93 (19-14) and '96 (17-7) and Cowboys in '96 (29-10). |
