Baxter Bits: Vikings at Broncos

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

Minnesota makes its first appearance at Denver since 1993 as these interconference foes battle for the first time since 1996.

While the Vikings own a one-game advantage in the series standings (5-4), Broncos managed a 21-17 triumph at the Metrodome in 1996 in the most recent clash between these teams.

The Vikings are 2-2 lifetime at Mile High Stadium dating back to 1972, their last appearance in Denver resulting in a 26-23 victory in 1993.

Numbers: After scoring at least 24 points in each of their 18 games (including playoffs) in 1998, the Vikings have been limited to 23 or fewer points in 6-of-7 contests in '99. They have allowed one sack and committed just three turnovers in three wins, while committing 15 turnovers and allowing 17 sacks in four losses in '99. WR Cris Carter has scored at least one touchdown in 28 of his last 44 regular-season contests dating back to '96. Since 1996, the Vikings have 87 takeaways in 36 wins, 17 takeaways in 19 losses in 54 regular-season contests. They have committed two or more turnovers in three straight games.

Including playoffs (1997-99), the Broncos are 34-2 when they total more rushing attempts than their opponent, 1-9 when Denver's opponent totals more rushing attempts.

Things to look for: The Super Bowl XXXIII matchup that never was has now turned into a battle of playoff survival as both the Vikings and Broncos are starting to show signs of life, especially on the offensive side of the ball, but must keep winning if they are to get back into their respective divisional races. Given the way both defensive units have played to date, there figures to be plenty of fireworks.

Etc.: The Vikings are 18-11 vs. AFC teams under head coach Dennis Green dating back to 1992 (0-1 in '99). IF HE PLAYS: Vikings' QB Randall Cunningham (198) needs two touchdown passes to become the 24th player in NFL history with 200 career touchdown passes.

Including Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII, the Broncos are 14-6 vs. NFC teams under head coach Mike Shanahan dating back to 1995 (1-1 in '99). The Broncos are 3-7 in their last 10 regular-season contests dating back to '98.
