Baxter Bits: Giants at Eagles

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Giants make their way to Philadelphia in position to sweep this bitter NFC East rivalry for the third straight season and the fifth time in 7 years.

Back in Week 4 at the Meadowlands, Giants QB Kent Graham threw a 9-yard TD pass to WR Ike Hilliard in the first quarter and PK Brad Daluiso added three field goals as Jim Fassel's team eeked out a 16-15 win in a sloppy affair that saw the teams combine for 1 offensive touchdown and eight turnovers.

The Giants have now won five straight and own a 70-58-2 overall edge (including playoffs) in the series standings.

As for New York's last appearance at Veterans Stadium (Week 17 of '98), Giants RB Gary Brown rushed for 112 yards and QB Kent Graham threw a pair of touchdown passes as New York rallied for a 20-10 win.

The Giants are 4-2 in their last six visits to Philadelphia dating back to 1993.

Worth noting is that the last eight regular-season series between these clubs (1991-98) have resulted in a sweep.

Numbers: In their last five meetings (1997-99) with Philadelphia (5-0), the Giants have totaled 1,596 yards and 11 offensive touchdowns, allowed just 11 sacks and committed eight turnovers--this after totaling just 702 yards (175.5 YPG), scored just two offensive touchdowns, committed 14 turnovers and allowed 27 sacks in their previous four games (1995-96) vs. Philadelphia (0-4). In the Eagles' last 23 games with the Giants dating back to 1988, Philadelphia's offense has scored 41 touchdowns (including an offensive fumble recovery) and the defense/special teams have scored 11 touchdowns. Also, Eagles have forced 54 turnovers (including 33 interceptions) and totaled 88 sacks in those 23 contests (1988-99).

The Giants are 2-1 when they fail to score an offensive touchdown, 2-2 when their offense scores a touchdowns in seven games in '99. Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Giants have committed just 29 turnovers in 28 wins, 63 turnovers in 27 losses and a tie. The Giants have forced two or more turnovers in 23 of their last 35 games (24-of-36, including playoffs) dating back to '97. They have scored 287 points and committed just 14 turnovers in 12 wins, while scoring just 115 points and committing 23 turnovers in 11 losses dating back to '98. Their defense has forced 32 turnovers and totaled 47 sacks in 12 wins, while totaling just five takeaways and 24 sacks in 11 losses dating back to '98. They have limited the opposition to 16 or fewer points in five straight games. The Giants have allowed three or more sacks in three straight games.

After scoring 21 points (3 offensive touchdowns) in the first quarter in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals, the Eagles have scored just 66 points in their last 27 quarters in '99 and have scored just three offensive touchdowns in their last 27 quarters. The Eagles have forced 19 turnovers in seven games in '99, this after totaling an NFL-low 17 takeaways in 16 games in '98. They have totaled 14 interceptions in seven games in '99, this after totaling just nine interceptions in 16 games in '98. Philadelphia has allowed 164 points in 11 wins (14.9 avg.), 680 points in 27 losses and a tie (24.3 avg.) dating back to '97. The Eagles have allowed 148 sacks in their last 39 games (1997-99), including 119 sacks in their last 30 contests dating back to '97. They have been limited to 17 or fewer points in 20 of their 23 contests dating back to '98. They have allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 19 of their last 23 contests dating back to '98. Their defense has forced two or more turnovers in four straight games and 6-of-7 contests in '99. The Eagles have limited the opposition to 16 or fewer points in four straight games.

Things to look for: After taking nearly three weeks off, the Giants' offense exploded against the Saints thanks to QB Kent Graham. But Jim Fassel surely remembers this year's earlier tilt with the Birds, whose opportunistic and improving defense gave New York all it could handle. And since the Big Blue will be without RB Gary Brown, Fassel will likely have to rely on his battered defensive unit once again.

Etc.: Including playoffs, the Giants are 14-5-1 vs. NFC East opponents and just 8-12 (0-1 in playoffs) vs. the rest of the NFL under head coach Jim Fassel (1997-99). Eagles PK Norm Johnson (1,692) needs seven points to tie Jan Stenerud (1,699) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time scoring list. Johnson has converted an NFL-record 284 consecutive PATs.
