The Chargers make their way to hostile Kansas City in position to sweep this longtime AFC West rivalry for the first time since 1996. Four weeks ago at Qualcomm Stadium (Week 4), Mike Riley's team spotted the Chiefs a 14-0 first-quarter lead, but Chargers QB Erik Kramer replaced an injured Jim Harbaugh and threw a pair of touchdown passes (1 INT) and the San Diego defense intercepted Chiefs QB Elvis Grbac four times as the Chargers rallied for a 21-14 triumph. Despite this year's earlier loss, Kansas City still owns a two-game lead (40-38-1) in the overall standings (including playoffs) and has been somewhat dominant this decade as Chiefs own a 13-7 overall mark in the 1990s vs. the Bolts, although one of those Chargers' wins was a 17-0 triumph at San Diego in the 1992 AFC First Round Playoffs. As for the Bolts' last visit to Arrowhead Stadium (Week 3 of '98), since-departed Chiefs QB Rich Gannon threw for 144 yards and a score and PK Pete Stoyanovich booted three field goals as Kansas City posted a 23-7 triumph in a contest which saw Chargers' QB Ryan Leaf complete just 1-of-15 passes for four yards (2 INTs). The Chargers have lost two straight and are just 2-7 in their last 9 visits to Kansas City dating back to 1990. Numbers: Chargers' quarterbacks have thrown 48 interceptions in their last 22 games dating back to '98, including 10 interceptions in their last two contests. The Chargers have allowed 41 points in four wins, 58 points in two losses in '99. San Diego has committed 27 turnovers in 21 wins, 106 turnovers in 33 losses since '96. They have been limited to 17 or fewer points in 18 of their last 25 games dating back to '97. The Chargers have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in six straight games. They have committed two or more turnovers in four straight games. The Chargers won five games in '98 by a combined total of 13 points, four games in 1999 by 47 points. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 633 points in 24 wins, 218 points in 15 losses dating back to '97. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs' quarterbacks have thrown 94 touchdown passes compared to just 30 interceptions in 68 victories, while throwing just 34 TD passes and 60 interceptions in 40 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 67 takeaways in 24 wins, 19 takeaways in 15 losses dating back to '97. After giving up just 63 points in their first five games (4-1), the Chiefs have allowed 394 points in their last 17 contests (7-10) dating back to '98. The Chiefs have forced two or more turnovers in seven straight games dating back to '98. The Chiefs have totaled two or more interceptions in five straight games.
Things to look for: San Diego's two-head quarterback tandem of Erik Kramer and Jim Harbaugh spent too much time throwing the football to the opposition, and now must face a Chiefs' defensive unit that has done a great job of harassing opponents into costly mistakes. Without a healthy running game, Mike Riley will have his hands full protecting his signal-callers, as well as his well-schooled defensive unit. Etc.: The Chiefs have won five straight home games dating back to '98. |
