Baxter Bits: Bills at Redskins

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Bills, playing their third consecutive road game, make their second appearance at Redskins Stadium this year (Redskins posted a 20-19 victory this summer) but their first trip to D.C. area in the regular season since 1990 as these interconference foes renew this infrequent series.

Including postseason, the Redskins own just a one-game lead in the standings (5-4) as these clubs have split their eight regular-season battles--the difference being the 'Skins 37-24 triumph in Super Bowl XXVI at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The Bills have prevailed in the last two meetings between the teams, including a 38-13 rout at Orchard Park in 1996 in the most recent encounter between the teams.

The Bills are 1-2 in three previous road tilts in this series, including a 29-14 loss at RFK Stadium in 1990 in their last appearance in the nation's capital.

Numbers: The Bills have committed seven turnovers and allowed seven sacks in five wins while committing nine turnovers and allowing 10 sacks in three losses in '99. Buffalo has committed three or more turnovers and been limited to 16 or fewer points in three straight games.

After allowing a team-record 61 sacks in 16 games in '98 (3 or more sacks in 13 of those contests), the Redskins have allowed eight sacks in seven games in '99, three or more sacks in just one of those seven contests. In his last nine starts (2 with Minnesota in 1998, 7 with Washington in 1999), Redskins QB Brad Johnson has completed 172-of-278 passes (61.9 percent) for 2,258 yards, 19 touchdowns and just five interceptions, with his team scoring a combined 311 points (31, 38, 35, 50, 27, 38, 24, 20 and 48 points) in those contests. RB Stephen Davis has rushed for 696 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games in 1999, running for 100-plus yards in three of those contests. In his three previous seasons (1996-98), Davis rushed for 815 yards and five touchdowns in 42 games and had failed to gain 100 or more yards rushing in any of those contests. In his last 18 games dating back to '98, Redskins WR Michael Westbrook has caught 76 passes for 1,326 yards and 11 touchdowns, totaling 100 or more yards receiving in six of those games. In his three previous seasons (1995-97), Westbrook caught 102 passes for 1,586 yards and just five touchdowns in 35 games and totaled 100 or more yards receiving in just two of those contests. After scoring just 93 points in their first seven games (0-7), the Redskins have scored 468 points in their last 16 contests (11-5) dating back to '98.

Things to look for: Buffalo's offense has turned into a one-man show as QB Doug Flutie makes his mistakes but keeps on pitching, eventually finding a way to rescue his team. And given the state of the Washington defense, he will get plenty of opportunities to put points on the board. But will it be enough against a Redskins' offense that is clicking on all cylinders and shows no signs of slowing down?

Etc.: The Redskins are 5-2, their best start since 1996 when they opened 7-1 but finished 9-7 and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bills are 27-10 vs. NFC competition during the regular season since 1990 (1-0 in '99), however they're 0-4 in Super Bowl competition. They are 12-1 vs. the NFC East since 1990 in the regular season, 0-4 in Super Bowls.

The Redskins are 9-14 vs. AFC teams since 1993 (1-0 in '99). Bills WR Andre Reed (12,872) needs 128 yards to become just the 5th player in NFL history with 13,000 receiving yards. Reed (86) needs two touchdown catches to tie Don Maynard (88) for 5th place on the NFL's all-time touchdown receptions list. Reed (87) needs 1 touchdown to tie Don Maynard (88) for 19th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list. Redskins WR Irving Fryar (795) needs five catches to become just the 7th player in NFL history with 800 career receptions. Fryar (12,084) needs 62 yards to tie Charlie Joiner (12,146) for 7th place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list.
