Baxter Bits: Jaguars at Falcons

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Jaguars make their first-ever appearance at the Georgia Dome as these clubs collide in the regular season for just the second time.

In the only previous regular-season meeting between the teams, Jaguars posted a memorable 19-17 victory in 1996 at ALLTEL Stadium when Falcons PK Morten Andersen missed a 30-yard field goal with 0:04 to play, propelling Tom Coughlin's club to their first-ever playoff appearance.

Numbers: Including playoffs, the Jaguars have seen a player gain 100 or more yards rushing in 11 of their last 25 games dating back to 1998, more than doubling the number of 100-yard rushing performances (5) that the Jaguars managed in the regular- and postseason combined (5) during their first three years in the NFL (1995-97). In their first four seasons in the NFL (1995-98), the Jaguars held an opponent without an offensive touchdown just three times in 64 games (3-of-70, including playoffs). In '99, the Jaguars have not allowed an offensive touchdown in 3-of-7 contests. Including playoffs, the Jaguars have forced 44 turnovers in 18 wins, eight turnovers in seven losses dating back to '98. The Jaguars have allowed 49 points in 6 wins, 20 points in one loss in '99. They have totaled 26 sacks in seven games in '99, this after totaling just 30 sacks in 16 games in '98. The Jags have totaled four or more sacks in four straight games and 6-of-7 contests in '99. They have limited the opposition to 10 or fewer points in four straight games and 5-of-7 contests in '99. RB James Stewart has scored at least one touchdown in three straight games.

Including playoffs, the Falcons have scored 516 points in 18 wins (28.7 PPG), but just 105 points in 9 losses (11.7 PPG) dating back to '98. The Falcons have recovered four opponent's fumble in eight games in '99, this after leading the NFL with 25 opponent's fumble recoveries in '98. They own a minus-6 turnover differential (11-17) in 8 games in '99, this after leading the NFL with a plus-20 turnover differential (44-24) in 16 games in '98. The Falcons have been outscored a combined 126-43 in the first half in eight games in '99. They have committed two or more turnovers in 5-of-8 contests in '99 and have allowed three or more sacks in five straight games.

Things to look for: Jacksonville's staunch defense continues to impress, and with RB Fred Taylor back in the fold it may be time for Tom Coughlin's team to switch into another gear. The Falcons' season has been a disaster to date, but Dan Reeves' will make damn sure the Jaguars' run defense is as good as advertised. It's hard to believe Falcons' QB Chris Chandler will make it through this contest.

Etc.: The Jaguars are 6-1 for the first time in the team's 5-year history (1995-99). They have won four straight games and have won 4 straight road games. Including playoffs, the Jaguars are 9-15 lifetime on artificial turf dating back to 1995. The Jaguars are 44-33 in their 77-game history (1995-99), 24-12 vs. the AFC Central but just 20-21 vs. the rest of the NFL (3-2 in playoffs). The Jaguars are 9-9 lifetime vs. NFC teams (2-0 in '99) dating back to 1995.

Including Super Bowl XXXIII, the Falcons are just 9-18 vs. AFC teams dating back to 1993 (0-2 in '99). FS Eugene Robinson (55) needs one interception to tie both Lem Barney and Pat Fischer (56) for 13th place on the NFL's all-time interception list. PK Morten Andersen (1,797) needs three points to become just the 3rd player in NFL history with 1,800 points scored. ). Andersen has scored at least one point in an NFL-record 246 straight games.
