Father of Chiefs long-snapper James Winchester killed in Will Rogers Airport shooting

Mike Winchester, the father of Kansas City Chiefs long-snapper James Winchester, was shot and killed outside of Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

Mike Winchester, 52, was an employee of Southwest Airlines. He also played football for Oklahoma as a punter in 1984 and 1985.

Police and airport officials closed the complex after the 1 p.m. shooting and directed people inside the terminal to take shelter. The suspect in the shooting was later found dead in a pickup truck in an airport parking garage, and police and airport spokeswoman Karen Carney said about 6:30 p.m. CT that the airport had resumed operations.

Video from a television station helicopter showed what appeared to be a pool of blood near the bottom of a ramp leading from the airport's departure area. Two ambulances and a fire truck stood by.

James Winchester joined the Chiefs last season. He played in all 16 regular-season games, plus two in the playoffs. He also snapped for the Chiefs in each of their nine games this year. He played in college at Oklahoma.

Hundreds of people were kept inside the airport terminal for hours after the shooting, and Carney said about 25 flights were canceled, most of those by Southwest Airlines, which canceled all flights scheduled to depart Oklahoma City for the remainder of the day.

The airport handles between 7,000 and 8,000 passengers daily for Alaska, Delta, Southwest and United airlines.
