CLEVELAND -- After throwing a touchdown pass Sunday night, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield trails only Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass to start a career.
The problem was, Mayfield needed another to defeat the Los Angeles Rams. Mayfield's heave into the end zone on fourth-and-goal was intercepted in the final seconds, sealing the Rams' 20-13 victory at FirstEnergy Stadium.
After going without a touchdown in the first half, Mayfield connected with tight end Demetrius Harris in the end zone in the third quarter to give Cleveland back the lead.
Mayfield's touchdown in his 16th career start broke the tie with Brad Johnson for the second-longest streak to start an NFL career with a touchdown pass. Warner, whose career coincidentally started with the Rams, threw touchdowns in his first 23 career starts.
However, the touchdown pass would prove to be the Browns' final score of the night.
To chants of "Baker, Baker ..." Mayfield engineered the potential game-tying drive, which began on a Juston Burris interception of Rams quarterback Jared Goff.
On third-and-15, Mayfield found Jarvis Landry for 27 yards. After he completed a first down pass to Damion Ratley and was roughed by Aaron Donald on the same play, Mayfield had the Browns at the four-yard line.
But three incompletions, followed by John Johnson III's interception, sealed the win for the Rams.
"Just not executing. I think I'm gonna have recurring nightmares over the throw to [tight end] Demetrius [Harris] up top [on third-and-goal]," Mayfield said. "I think I'll be able to look at the film and know I have Jarvis [Landry] underneath.
Cleveland is now 1-2 on the season with two losses coming at home.
