Quarterback Justin Fields runs 4.44 in 40-yard dash at Ohio State Buckeyes' pro day

NFL, NFL Draft, College Football, Ohio State Buckeyes

Quarterback Justin Fields ran the 40-yard dash in an unofficial time of 4.44 seconds at the Ohio State Buckeyes' pro day Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 228-pound player, widely expected to be a first-round selection in next month's NFL draft, worked out and threw for the 31 NFL teams reportedly in attendance. The Los Angeles Rams were the only team not in attendance, according to NFL Network.

"Yeah, I think overall, I had a solid day. Of course, as I think everybody knows, my goal in that 40-yard dash was to be at least in the 4.3s, so of course I'm kind of mad about that. But, you know, other than that, I thought I threw pretty well. I thought I just had a few missed throws, but that happens. Not everybody is going to be perfect," he told reporters.

Draft prospects are working out for teams at their respective pro days instead of at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, which was canceled this year because of the pandemic.

According to ESPN Stats & Information data, only one other quarterback has run a faster time at the scouting combine -- Robert Griffin III, who ran a 4.41 in the 40 in 2012. Marcus Mariota is second with a 4.52 in 2015.

Fields is one of at least five quarterbacks projected as first-round picks, with Clemson's Trevor Lawrence expected to go No. 1 and BYU's Zach Wilson, Alabama's Mac Jones and North Dakota State's Trey Lance also garnering attention as potential picks inside the top 10.

Jones also threw on Tuesday, at Alabama's second pro day.

Fields passed for 5,373 yards, 63 touchdowns and nine interceptions over two seasons at Ohio State after starting his career at Georgia. He is set to become the second Ohio State quarterback drafted in the first round over the past three seasons, after the program had none between Art Schlichter in 1982 and Dwayne Haskins in 2019.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg contributed to this report.
