New York Giants lose RB Saquon Barkley, QB Daniel Jones, WR Kenny Golladay in loss to Cowboys

ARLINGTON, Texas -- One by one, the New York Giants top offensive weapons went down on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Running back Saquon Barkley left with an ankle injury in the first quarter, quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a concussion late in the second quarter and wide receiver Kenny Golladay exited at halftime with what he termed a hyperextended knee.

Barkley and Jones were both carted off during Sunday's 44-20 loss to the Cowboys and missed the remainder of the contest. It left the Giants without seven of their 11 Week 1 offensive starters because of injury.

"It is crazy just looking in [at it]," Golladay said of the string of injuries the Giants suffered in one half on Sunday.

Barkley has a left ankle sprain, a source told ESPN. He was seen in a boot and on crutches after the contest. The full severity of the injury will be determined after further testing Monday. If the results are positive as expected, the likelihood is the Giants' star running back would miss a "couple weeks."

The Giants host the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers the next two weeks.

"He's very humble," said backup running back Devontae Booker, who stepped in for Barkley. "So he may be back next week. Who knows?"

Jones was "in good spirits" following the contest, according to a source close to the quarterback. He got the wind knocked out of him and suffered the concussion after colliding helmet to helmet with Cowboys linebacker Jabril Cox trying to get into the end zone before halftime.

The third-year quarterback, who had been playing the best football of his career early this season, had a lengthy conversation with his parents outside the locker room during the final minutes of the contest. He also spoke with coach Joe Judge after the game.

"I'm not going to get into any medical diagnosis. I saw him in the locker room afterwards right there. Just checked on him," Judge said. "In terms of where he'll go next week, I don't have an answer for you right now. We'll see where he goes. Obviously we're all hopeful that he'll be back and he'll be healthy."

Golladay suffered his injury in the first quarter when he tried to make a catch with cornerback Trevon Diggs draped on his back.

"Tried to fight through it but the pain kind of got a little bit worse. It's frustrating," said Golladay, who has already dealt with hamstring, hip and groin problems this summer and season.

Golladay said he would have an MRI on Monday and "hope for the best."

Jones was hit while trying to get into the end zone on a third-down run late in the second quarter, colliding with Cox near the goal line. Jones fell to the ground and his face mask slammed against the turf.

The quarterback got up slowly after the hit and looked woozy. He eventually stumbled before the officials and teammates kept him on his feet. The cart came out for Jones and he was taken to the locker room immediately. Mike Glennon took over at quarterback.

"To be honest, I thought he just got the wind knocked out of him cause he laid there for a second but got up, put his hands on his knees," Golladay said. "Any time you see a player stumble a little bit, doesn't matter a quarterback or not, kind of scary. So definitely trying to make sure he's all right."

Barkley's left foot turned sideways when he stepped on the foot of Dallas cornerback Jourdan Lewis in the first quarter after an incomplete pass in his direction. He limped off the field in significant pain.

The Giants' star running back was shown on the sideline with his shoe off and his ankle severely swollen. He banged his arms against his legs in disgust before being taken to the locker room.

"It's fresh. So I'm pretty sure it's frustrating for him," Golladay said after speaking with Barkley in the locker room. "But at the same time, he's in good spirits as well. Hopefully he's able to go."

The Giants were already playing without left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot), wide receiver Sterling Shepard (hamstring), left guard Shane Lemieux (knee) and center Nick Gates (leg).

Thomas was active but Judge said afterward it was in an "emergency" role. Lemieux and Gates are on injured reserve while Shepard and wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring) have a good chance to return next week after undergoing extensive pregame workouts running routes at full speed.

"I guess it was kind of the guys we played with in the preseason, to a certain extent," said Glennon, who went 16-of-25 passing for 196 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in Jones' absence.

New York also lost rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney after he was ejected for throwing a punch following a scrum at Dallas safety Damontae Kazee in the fourth quarter. Toney, the Giants' first-round pick this year, was having a career game with 189 yards receiving.

"There is a pretty distinct line between competing and doing things we're not going to condone as a team that put us behind," Judge said. "That is not going to be acceptable."

Judge was going to let the league handle any possible suspension from the incident. Toney also took a cart towards the X-ray room after the contest as he pointed to his lower leg.

Barkley's injury comes just as he seemed to be returning to full health following a torn ACL last season. He scored the game-winning touchdown last week in overtime to beat the New Orleans Saints, and also had a 54-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.

Barkley came into Sunday's contest with 52 carries for 186 yards and two touchdowns. He had two carries for nine yards before the injury against the Cowboys.
