Plaxico Burress has shoulder surgery

NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress had season-ending surgery Monday to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Burress was hurt Thursday in practice when he landed awkwardly on his right arm while trying to make a catch over defensive backs Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith and Ryan Steed.

Burress was battling Jerricho Cotchery, David Gilreath and rookies Markus Wheaton and Justin Brown for a spot behind starters Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.

Burress, whose 36th birthday was also Monday, had three receptions in four games with the Steelers last season.

In 11 NFL seasons with the Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets, Burress has 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
