KANATA, Ontario (AP) -- Brendan Morrison made sure the New Jersey Devils had two points to show for their fast start. The former University of Michigan star scored 2:52 into overtime to give the Devils a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday. A goal by Ottawa's Vinnie Prospal with eight-tenths of a second remaining in regulation forced overtime. "We make it tough on ourselves," Devils defenseman Scott Stevens said. "But we're playing smarter hockey and we're getting rewarded." Sergei Brylin, Jason Arnott and Brad Bombardir scored in the first nine minutes as New Jersey raced to a 3-0 lead. "We got off to a good start," Morrison said. "We wanted to show killer instinct, but they're a great team and they fought back." New Jersey finished the season series against Ottawa 3-0-1. Shawn McEachern scored twice for the Senators, who had lost only one of their previous 10 games and had a five-game home unbeaten streak snapped. Ottawa goalie Ron Tugnutt was replaced by Patrick Lalime after Arnott's goal at 5:02 of the first period. "It was my fault we lost," Tugnutt said. "I'm pretty upset, embarrassed. When you deserve to get yanked like I did in the last two games, you have to work through it." Lalime was beaten by Bombardir's shot from the top of the slot through traffic at 8:59, but McEachern countered with his 13th and 14th goals of the season. He swung in front from the corner and swept the puck past Brodeur at 12:08 of the first period. Then he was credited with a goal 7:55 into the second period when the puck bounced in off a defender on a two-on-one break with Daniel Alfredsson. Prospal's tying goal extended his point streak to six games. "There wasn't much time left, but I yelled at Marian Hossa and he made a smart pass from behind the net," Proposal said. "It was a big goal at the moment." Devils goalie Martin Brodeur was fooled on the play. "Hossa just threw it blind and I was looking for the wraparound," Brodeur said. "We let them back in the game, it was our own fault." | ALSO SEE NHL Scoreboard New Jersey Clubhouse Ottawa Clubhouse RECAPS New Jersey 4 Ottawa 3 AUDIO/VIDEO Vaclav Prospal scores with eight-tenths of a second left to force OT. avi: 633 k RealVideo: 56.6 | ISDN | T1 |
