Gilmour lifts Blackhawks past Sharks in OT

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CHICAGO (AP) -- A little uncustomary selfishness paid off for Doug Gilmour and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Gilmour scored 56 seconds into overtime to complete a two-on-one and give the Blackhawks a 5-4 victory Monday night over the San Jose Sharks after Chicago squandered a 4-1 third-period lead.

Gilmour carried the puck down right wing as he and Sylvain Cote moved in against San Jose defenseman Gary Suter and goalie Steve Shields. But instead of passing, Gilmour drilled a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped down into the goal for his 17th of the season.

"On a two-on-one, I don't shoot too often," said Gilmour, known as playmaker in his 17-year career. "Cote made the whole play. If he's not there, it's a one-on-one and our chances aren't that good."

Cote saw things the same way.

"I was just a decoy," said Cote, who scored an overtime goal last week against Vancouver. "I was ready to fire, but it gives him two options and it makes the defenseman guess and the goalie guess."

San Jose's Mike Ricci scored a power-play goal with 4:13 left in regulation to cap a three-goal third-period rally that forced the extra session.

"I don't know what to think," Ricci said. "It's still disappointing in the loss, but you get a point. I'm disappointed in the way we started the game more than anything else."

Eric Daze and Michael Nylander each scored twice for Chicago, which won for the fourth time in five contests. Steve Sullivan had two assists for the Blackhawks, who have four straight home victories after winning only four of 19 prior contests at United Center.

Patrick Marleau and Gary Suter also had third-period goals for San Jose. Alexander Korolyuk scored in the second for the Sharks, who have won just one of five games (1-3-1) and slipped below .500 for the second time this season.

Vincent Damphousse had three assists for San Jose.

Daze, who extended his point streak to six games, has six goals during that span. Nylander has 10 goals and eight assists in his last 21 contests, while Sullivan has 20 points in 17 games.

Each team scored three times with the man-advantage.

Chicago led 2-0 after the first period on power-play goals by Nylander and Daze. Nylander opened the scoring with 5:28 left after Sullivan fed him in the left circle. Daze made it 2-0 with 1:07 remaining by popping a rebound of Sylvain Cote's shot past Shields.

Daze stretched the lead to 3-0, again on a power play, at 3:54 of the second, with a back-handed tip-in from the edge of the crease.

Korolyuk cut it to 3-1 at 10:37 by beating Jocelyn Thibault with a power-play goal from the right circle, but Nylander restored the three-goal lead with 1:37 left.

Marleau trimmed it to 4-2 at 2:40 of the third when he beat defenseman Anders Eriksson and broke in alone on Thibault. Suter's power-play goal from the top of the slot at 7:38 cut it to 4-3.
