BOX SCORE
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Eric Daze was in the right place at the right time for the Chicago Blackhawks. Daze scored his second goal of the game off a rebound with 9.7 seconds left in the third period, lifting the Blackhawks to a 5-5 tie with the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. The equalizer was set up when Boris Mironov picked off a clearing attempt by the Flames' Bobby Dollas. Mironov's shot was stopped by goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, but Daze banged in the rebound. "I stepped up to try to keep the puck in the zone," Mironov said, " and I got lucky." Said Dollas, who set up the goal that put the Flames ahead 5-4: "I didn't want to throw it blind. I looked up and saw Mironov on the middle ice side of (Bill) Lindsay so I went to shoot it and on my backhand it spun right off my stick. If I make that play, Billy's gone." The tying goal came with Chicago goaltender Jocelyn Thibault on the bench for an extra skater. Valeri Bure had the best chance of overtime but Thibault stopped him twice. Jeff Shantz, Bill Lindsay, Phil Housley, Jason Wiemer and Bure, with his 28th goal of the season, scored for Calgary, now winless in its last five (0-4-1). Housley's goal, his first in 11 games, gave him 310 for his career -- tied for third with former New York Islander Denis Potvin for goals by a defenseman. Also scoring for the Blackhawks were Steve Sullivan, Mironov, and Sylvain Cote. Michael Nylander had four assists. "We had a big 4-1 lead and we should have been able to protect that," said Nylander. "We have to be stronger." Chicago led 3-0 after the first period only to have the Flames take a 5-4 advantage early in the third. Wiemer outmuscled Mironov for the puck behind the Blackhawks net and fed Bure, who had the puck deflect in off his skate to tie the game 4-4 at 1:59 of the third. Less than two minutes later, Wiemer gave the Flames the lead on a breakaway off a long pass from Dollas. "We worked our tails off to come back and to lose the lead like that, it stings," said Wiemer. "But we'll learn from this and move on." Giguere replaced Fred Brathwaite to start the second period and stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced. Thibault finished with 39 saves.
