Sharks' big second period KOs Kings

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Owen Nolan scored a pair of goals, the San Jose Sharks broke a four-game home losing streak and a lot of fans felt silly for wasting perfectly good hats.

Nolan scored his 37th and 38th goals in a 3:03 span of the second period, and had another taken away from him later in the period, as the Sharks defeated the streaking Los Angeles Kings 6-3 Saturday night.

Nolan initially was credited with a third goal in the final minute of the second period and fans pelted the ice with caps as Nolan appeared to have completed his 11th career hat trick.

But the goal was changed to Mike Ricci after officials determined the puck was kicked in by Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell and that Nolan never touched it. Ricci, the last Shark to touch the puck, got credit for the goal.

"As soon as they said his name, he came over to me and said that I put it in," Ricci said. "And then when I saw the hats coming down, I figured I'd get booed. If he gets to 49 goals this season, then I'll be in real trouble. Or 59."

Nolan, second in the league in goals to Florida's Pavel Bure, had to settle for his 10th multi-goal game of the season and the 47th of his career. He knew all along the goal belonged to Ricci.

"I started laughing because I knew he scored and I said all those fans are wasting their hats," Nolan said. "I wasn't even close to it."

O'Donnell said he was simply trying to clear the puck and take the pressure off Los Angeles goalie Jamie Storr.

"I knew Nolan was right behind me. I was trying to direct the puck away from the goal and I just didn't quite do it," he said. "I turned around and apologized to Jamie and he said, 'No problem. Nolan would have probably scored anyway.'"

Todd Harvey, Vincent Damphousse and Ronnie Stern added goals for the Sharks, who moved past idle Colorado into seventh place in the Western Conference with 67 points. Stern's goal went into an empty net with five seconds left.

Jaroslav Modry, Jozef Stumpel and Glen Murray scored for the Kings, who lost for only the fourth time in 13 games. Luc Robitaille had two assists for Los Angeles to extend his streak to 13 games with at least one point.

The loss ended an 11-day trip for Los Angeles, which went 4-3 on a journey that began Feb. 16 and included games in four time zones. The Kings begin a seven-game homestand on Tuesday against Vancouver.

Ziggy Palffy, who leads Los Angeles with 62 points, missed the game with back spasms. It was the sixth game he has missed this season because of back problems -- after missing only three other games in his six-year NHL career.

Garry Galley of the Kings was sidelined with a cervical strain that forced him to leave Friday's game at Vancouver.

The Sharks scored on two of their six power plays, and didn't allow a goal when the Kings had a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:33 early in the third period.

"Basically, we got in trouble when we played shorthanded," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "We killed too many penalties. They capitalized on their opportunities and we didn't.

"(San Jose goalie Steve) Shields was outstanding in the third period. We kind of threw everything at them and he made some great stops."
