Stumpel makes quick work of Nashville

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Nashville Predators are still causing trouble for Los Angeles. Only now, the Kings are winning the tight games.

Jozef Stumpel scored his 100th NHL goal on a power play 28 seconds into overtime Saturday night, lifting the Kings to a 3-2 victory over the Predators.

Dan Bylsma ended a 23-game scoring drought and defenseman Garry Galley also scored, helping the Kings end a three-game winless streak.

"We talked before the game about how hard they work. That's their trademark," Bylsma said. "They're the kind of team that comes at you for 60 minutes. They're not one of the most talented teams in the league, but they get the job done by working hard. So we wanted to match their work ethic and try to beat them with our skill."

The second-year expansion team is 0-3 against Los Angeles, after going 3-1 against the Kings last season -- including two wins in the final 6 1-2 weeks to spoil their playoff chances.

Bill Houlder scored his third goal at 13:19 of the second period and Scott Walker scored midway through the first as the Predators rallied twice to tie. Each of Nashville's last five defeats have been by one goal.

"You have to expect that every team is going to be tough from here on in," Stumpel said. "We're fighting for a playoff position, and it's not going to be easy."

After failing to score on five power plays, the Kings got another chance when referee Mick McGeough sent Karlis Skrastins off for tripping with 25 seconds left in regulation.

Stumpel beat Mike Dunham high to the stick side with a one-timer from the middle of the left circle for his 12th goal.

"This game was a good step for us," Kings right wing Glen Murray said. "We kept our composure and didn't give up any good scoring chances in the third period. These are tough games to play. We're going to have to win these games 3-2, 2-1 from here on out."

The Predators, outshot 25-2 in the final 35 minutes of Thursday's loss at San Jose, managed only two shots through the first 13:19 of the second period against Stephane Fiset. The second shot tied it 2-2, as Houlder skated down the slot and redirected Greg Johnson's centering pass over Fiset's glove.

Fiset was replaced by Jamie Storr 56 seconds later because of a groin strain, after facing 11 shots. Another 36 seconds elapsed before teammate Bryan Smolinski sustained a corneal abrasion and a two-stitch cut under his left eye, the result of an inadvertent high stick by Johnson as they battled behind the Los Angeles net.

The injury knocked Smolinski out of the game, and the Kings managed only one harmless shot during the ensuing four-minute power play.

Storr earned the victory, stopping all seven shots.

Dunham stopped Ziggy Palffy on a breakaway less than four minutes in and a minute later, Luc Robitaille hit the right post from close range and had his 16-game point streak snapped.

Bylsma opened the scoring at 9:19 of the first, beating Dunham high to the glove side.

"We have to play better in our own end than that," Houlder said. "We have to be much more determined because we have guys uncovered in front of the net, and that can't happen. But it happened fairly often tonight."

Walker was credited with his sixth goal just 57 seconds later when his centering pass banked in off the leg of Kings defenseman Mattias Norstrom.

Galley made it 2-1 at 16:22 of the period with his ninth goal. Galley beat Dunham high to the stick side with a slap shot from the right circle.
