FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Craig MacDonald and Andrei Kovalenko each recorded a goal and an assist as the Carolina Hurricanes cruised to a 4-1 exhibition victory over the Washington Capitals.

The game was played at the home of the Fayetteville Force of the Central Hockey League, some 60 miles south of the Hurricanes' new home in Raleigh.

Mike Eagles scored a power-play goal with 11 seconds left to spoil Eric Fichaud's shutout. The Capitals had been one of four unbeaten teams in the preseason.

The 19-year-old MacDonald, a 1998 10th-round draft pick, scored his first preseason goal at 3:22 of the first period and set up Shane Willis' tally at 11:47 as Carolina went ahead, 3-0.

Steve Halko also scored for the Hurricanes, who improved to 2-2 in the exhibition season. They combined for six goals in their first three games.

The Capitals were only 1-for-9 on the power play against Fichaud, who stopped 21 shots. Olaf Kolzig made 13 saves for Washington.

Bates Battaglia had a pair of first-period assists for Carolina.
