ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Mindful of Mike Modano's request not to seek revenge, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Dallas Stars played fight-free hockey in their highly anticipated rematch. Teemu Selanne scored on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period, and Guy Hebert made 37 saves as Anaheim shut out Dallas 3-0 Friday night for the first time in franchise history.
The Stars beat the Ducks 2-0 a week ago in a raucous game that put Modano in the hospital. Also in that game, Darryl Sydor fractured his eye socket and Anaheim's Jim McKenzie, Ruslan Salei and Pascal Trepanier were suspended. "Everybody's happy this game is over," Selanne said. "We just tried to turn the page." Modano had asked his teammates not to get even on his behalf Friday, and they complied. There were just six penalties -- none in the final 25 minutes -- and only one noteworthy tangle. "There was a lot of hype built up in this game for nothing," Dallas center Joe Nieuwendyk said. "Those guys received their suspensions. The point was well made by Mike and you try and move on." Richard Matvichuk pushed Paul Kariya from behind with four minutes remaining in the second period. A shoving match broke out between several players and the Dallas net got knocked off its posts, but no penalties were assessed. "I'm relieved it's over with," Hartsburg said. "Our games with Dallas the rest of the year will be intense. They're missing two great players, so they'll be a much better team when they get those two back." Modano and Sydor aren't on the road trip. Modano is recovering from strained neck ligaments and a slight concussion after a head-first push into the boards last Saturday. The teams will meet four more times this season. "When he gets back to feeling a little better and gets back skating, he'll feel good about the game again," Nieuwendyk said. "But no one likes to go through what he went through, and it just makes you think about a lot of things when something like that happens. Everyone else around the league really took notice, and maybe it sent a message to everybody around the league," he said. The Ducks led 1-0 on Kevin Haller's goal at 13:18 of the first period. His shot between the circles beat Ed Belfour glove side. Hebert earned his fourth career assist on the goal. Belfour played solidly, but it wasn't enough against a team that he has dominated over the years. He stopped 18 shots and has a 16-5-1 record against Anaheim. Hebert won for the first time in three games and earned his 23rd career shutout. "We knew the importance of the game," Hebert said. "It was a nice break for us. There was so much attention with what happened in Dallas." With Brian Skrudland off for interference and Matvichuk penalized for high-sticking, the Ducks gained a 5-on-3 advantage in the second period. Selanne's slap shot from the right circle caught the left corner of the net with 48 seconds left on the power play for a 2-0 lead. "We knew this would be a great chance to show what kind of team we are," Selanne said. "It was so important after those two games that we got our confidence back." Dallas barely missed a chance to score five minutes into the third period when Brett Hull's shot hit the post. Oleg Tverdovsky scored Anaheim's final goal into an empty net from a shot behind both blue lines with 23 seconds remaining. The Ducks are 3-3-1 all-time in home openers.
