Third-period burst boosts Red Wings

DETROIT (AP) -- One night after the San Jose Sharks made team history, they looked just ordinary against the Detroit Red Wings.

Sergei Fedorov scored on a breakaway to highlight a four-goal third period as the Red Wings beat San Jose 6-3 Wednesday night to stop the Sharks' four-game winning streak.

The Sharks, who won 2-1 Tuesday for their first-ever win over the New York Rangers and their best start in team history, still have an NHL-best 14 points with a 7-3-0 record.

"It's not much of a break in the schedule when you play New York and then here tonight," said Sharks coach Darryl Sutter, whose team ended a six-game road trip with its fifth game in eight days. "It was really evident against Detroit that you can't be short one cylinder."

Vyacheslav Kozlov had two assists and Chris Osgood made 16 saves for the Red Wings. The Red Wings also got goals from Brendan Shanahan, Martin Lapointe, Darren McCarty, Igor Larionov and Doug Brown as they stopped the Sharks' winning streak at four games.

"We came out with a lot of jump and tried to take advantage of the fact they played a game last night," Shanahan said. "Obviously we're a well-rested team right now."

Detroit (5-1-1) was playing for the first time since Saturday.

"We're happy with our effort and we're getting closer to playing a 60-minute game," said McCarty, whose goal was his first in five games since he re-signed with the team. "It's good to be back playing and winning."

Jeff Friesen, Brad Stuart and Vincent Damphousse scored for the Sharks. Owen Nolan assisted on Damphousse's goal, giving him at least one point in every Sharks game.

"You shouldn't be tired. It's not an excuse. Everybody does it," San Jose's Mike Ricci said. "Tonight I think we relied a little too much on our goaltender. Three goals should be enough to win a game. We're happy to have won some good games, but we have to do it every night."

Steve Shields, who was 6-1-0 with a league-leading 1.31 goals-against average coming in, gave up all six Detroit goals. He made 30 saves.

"I wasn't as tired as I thought I'd be," Shields said. "I had a lot of energy until the end. We didn't look that bad, but every mistake we made wound up in the back of the net.

"You don't like to make excuses about why you didn't play well. We didn't, and we just have to play better and make sure we're focused."

Detroit led 2-1 when McCarty started the third-period burst. He intercepted a Sharks clearing attempt and ripped a shot past Shields' glove at 1:30.

"It was just a play where I wanted to get a quick shot off a turnover and make sure it's on the net," McCarty said.

Stuart brought the Sharks back only 40 seconds later when he shot through a group of players and beat Osgood for his third goal.

But Larionov restored Detroit's two-goal lead when he put home Mathieu Dandenault's rebound at 3:35.

Fedorov broke in alone with a pass from rookie Yuri Butsayev and fired it past Shields to make it 5-2 at 5:59. The assist was Butsayev's first career point.

Damphousse later tucked the puck between Osgood and the right post. The Sharks claimed the puck crossed the line, and a video review confirmed it to make the score 5-3 at 11:13.

But Brown responded with his second goal 2:57 later to restore Detroit's three-goal lead.

Friesen's seventh goal, a deflection off a skate of Detroit defenseman Larry Murphy, gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead 9:16 into the second period.

Shanahan answered with his second 2:26 later when he spun around the right dot and fired a shot over Shields' glove.

Lapointe easily converted a cross-crease pass from Kozlov for his first goal, which put the Red Wings up 2-1 with 59 seconds left in the period.
