| NEW YORK -- New Jersey Devils right wing Randy McKay was suspended three games without pay by the NHL on Monday for slashing Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ulf Samuelsson in Saturday's 5-3 loss.

The incident occurred in the final minute of the third period, and McKay received a major penalty and a game misconduct. After the game, the rugged right wing said he retaliated after Samuelsson tried to take out his knees with a check at the blue line.
"I've blown both my knees before and I'm not at the stage in my
career to let it happen again," McKay explained. "And I just
let my emotions get away from me for a minute."
McKay will miss Wednesday's game against Montreal, Thursday's
contest at Boston and Saturday's game against Toronto.
Ironically, he will be eligible to return against Philadelphia on Nov. 9.
McKay is third on the Devils in scoring with three goals and five assists in 11 games. Under terms of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, he will forfeit $29,800. | |
