ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues, seeking to beef up for the stretch drive, acquired veteran right wing Stephane Richer from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday for defenseman Chris McAlpine and goalie Rich Parent.

"Richer certainly gives us a another experienced scorer," coach Joel Quenneville said about an hour before the Blues played the Los Angeles Kings. "He's a proven 50-goal man and he's been on championship teams. Hopefully he can add some speed and skill up front for us."

Richer, 33, is a 15-year NHL veteran who scored 50 goals twice for Montreal. He has scored 20 or more goals in 12 seasons and played for two Stanley Cup champions -- Montreal in 1986 and New Jersey in 1995. For his career, Richer has 399 goals.

In 20 games for Tampa Bay this season, he had seven goals and five assists.

"One of the concerns about getting a player like him, is that maybe you wonder is he can be an everyday player at his age and at this stage of his career," Quenneville noted. "But obviously, his experience is helpful down the stretch run and he's going to add some leadership."

Richer has been frustrated about dwindling playing time for the Lightning. In December, he requested a trade and was placed on waivers. The Lightning reassigned him to the Detroit Vipers of the IHL, then suspended him without pay when he initially didn't report.

Richer, who is in the second year of a three-year, $6.6 million contract, eventually did report and played in two games with no points.

"I think the deal was done rather quickly," Quenneville said. "I know that (GM) Larry (Pleau) and our group is always looking to improve our team. When Richer was sent to Detroit, they worked out a deal with him, knowing that they were going to try to move him."

McAlpine played in 21 games for the Blues this season, scoring one goal and adding one assist. He had one goal and four assists in 10 games after being sent to Worcester of the American Hockey League.

Parent was considered by many to be the Blues' goalie of the future. He has not played for St. Louis this season, but was 17-7 with a 2.21 goals against average for Utah of the International Hockey League.
